I really enjoyed last night, shame they are not showing the other episode next week....really suprised the BBC hasnt taken the rest of the series, its got very good reviews and has been very popular elsewhere. You cannot judge a series by one episode/story. There I actually liked Zen as well and look how that was dumped by the BBC.

I enjoyed this, loved Ingrid. Didn't get why he was with another woman at the end. I think its too easy to compare all these foreign dramas, I think its better not too and to enjoy each one separately. Don't normally get real porn thrown in either.
Can't see a British drama showing that.So there's one next week, I like the two hour format. Any chance of the BBC buying any more? Any reason to think they won't. With Zen gone, this might act as therapy for now, until another channel buy it. I think there were 22 episodes/films made altogether based on the books. All have been subtitled into English so no real excuse for BBC not buying them. According to BK, there isn't another episode next week now. Does anyone out there know why Montalbano's not on and what is going to be on instead? |

According to the books, Ingrid is his occasional "friend", but the girl at the end was Livia, his actual girlfriend/lover who lives, I think, in Genoa.

Then the week after it's looking like a Spiral repeat- but that's not absolutely certain yet, will have to wait a few days for confirmation on that. Regards BK |

Hello my northern hemisphere crime-loving friends!
The Montalbano series has screened over here in Australia for many years, albeit intermittently, on SBS - our devoted foreign-language channel. It's certainly different in tone to The Killing, Wallander and Spiral, but I really enjoy it for what it is - a light hearted, visually appealing whodunnit. It's nice to watch TV sometimes and not be challenged TOO much - to just enjoy! SBS is currently screening repeats of Spiral 2 which is fantastic for me as I missed it the first time round (was only on the SBS digital channel then, and I didn't have digital TV in those days.....). It is being shown in 2-episode blocks, so I am getting a double dose of Spiral each week! Last 2 eps this week which I'm really looking forward to. Here's hoping Spiral 3 isn't too far away from screening here. |

I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed it more because I watched the accompanying doc on Italian Noir and because I have been to the locations. Last year I went to Sicily, and in Trapani, Agrigento, Ragusa Ibla (where most of the scenes are filmed) and Modica, heard about the novels and the scenes shot in those places. I love the South East part of Sicity, it's stunning - much more stunning than you saw in this drama - it's inexpensive, and I strongly reccomend a visit.
Why is the BBC not showing all the Montalbanos? I missed the one or two shown a while back. It takes time to get into a series and to learn the characters, style and culture. This is very different from the much darker Scandinavian stuff we all love, or our own usually depressing drama, so it needs more airtime to grow on us. Like most Italian things, it's not rushed and taken slowly and not totally logically. I liked the quirkiness of it, the comedy, and just that it's Italian. |

The BBC only bought the rights to two of these Insp. Montalbano episodes. The Tindari one and the ''Montalbano's Croquettes'' story. The Croquettes one was shown December 2010. I think it's to keep the subbed drama slot ticking over until Forbrydelsen II starts showing. Maybe in October(If Spiral I is being repeated- that will take up 4 Saturdays) |

I wonder why they bought just 2. I asked a while back at my local DVD store and they said Montalbano is not distributed in the UK, or at least was not at that time. I must ask again. Or maybe someone knows?

IIRC, they only bought two "Krister-Wallanders" initially as well, but the feedback from those encouraged them to buy the rest. The feedback about IM was, probably, not so positive (it's proved to be a bit of a "marmite" show!) so they've not felt the need to get the rest - but I live in hope!

Hi fellow Euro crime watchers!
I have sky+ IM and am so looking forward to watching it. I did see the other episode back in December and did enjoy it, it was a bit lighter and more tongue in cheek than other Euro Crime I have seen. My daughter was married in Sicily (Taormina) what a beautiful place! So I am looking forward to the scenery too! Ciao x |

K DVDs are available in Oz if you want to torture yourself with the rest. |

I wonder if the reason we seem to prefer the Wallanders, The Killing and Spiral is because they are set in countries that have a similar climate to ours and so people from those countries tend to have a similar demeanour to ours thus we are perhaps more understanding of the way they behave.
I could probably put this a bit better but I hope you understand the meaning behind it |

I imagine Montalbano could even find the light-hearted whimsy in a an episode about a paedophile ring or a series of brutal child murders.

Yeah I agree - I remember that Lars Mikkelsen said in one interview that we're similar to the Danes in terms of having a certain melancholy aspect to our nature. He was trying to explain why we went so mad for Forbrydelsen over here. He said that they, in turn, like our Morse and Frost. I guess some of us have Viking blood in our veins too so there could be a kind of common mentality to an extent - not to mention the similar language!
It must be a Northern European thing. There are many long, dark, cold nights to get through no wonder we end up brooding! It's probably more to it than just the weather/seasons but I'm sure that's part of it. And the Viking blood, some of us must have that. Especially those of us who love TK

I enjoyed this although the organ twist was one I could have done with out as it's overused at the moment and how fast do Italian people talk.
The food , the comedy and sexual scenes on the video tape (I had to check when this was made!) were quite surprising as i'm used to Wallander and The Killing which are bleak and tight so not much room for laughs. |

Official BARB rating for the repeat showing of "Tindari": 582k! I'll see if I can find out how that compares to its rating first time round...
K edit: I can't see its rating for the first showing in Dec 2008, so it was well under 200k. |

Does that include delayed viewing KT? People who recorded it to watch later + iPlayer etc? You would imagine with those kind of figures it would be classed as a success when compared to the likes of Wallander, Spiral & Forbrydelsen. And would warrant the BBC getting more new eps in to broadcast.
I agree, they must now buy and show all 22 episodes - no excuses permitted (or I'll send Catarello round!) ![]() K |

Those are the "seven day" ratings, they include PVR and Virgin Media catchup viewing but don't include PC-based iPlayer views.

When those ''trial'' episodes got very good ratings BBC4 picked up the rest. Of course that was before the new ''cuts'' regime came into force. So you(we) will have to live in hope for more IMs |

Masochists with a penchant for farcical slapheaded coppering might like to know there’s another ep on Saturday. No idea which one as I quickly flipped past it in the Radio Times tutting in disgust at the waste of licence payer’s money on throwback eurotrash.......
