As a bit of a Dario Argento fan, thought the dressing of the animal killer in a raincoat and gloves was a nice touch. Only problem is (and it's not because of the show) I keep dropping off at about half 10 and missing all the endings! Will have to watch them again.

Oh definitely - I'll probably end up liking him just as much. I love the whole idea of the show, and if Luca hadn't done such a good job of the original then Il Giovanne would never have been made.

Yeah I really like Michele hehe and he must be pretty good too because very few people here complained about him despite many understandably being devotees of Luca.
There's room in the world for two Montalbanos

I like him too! And yes he has done a great job - I mentioned how well he does the mannerisms. It hasn't been like the David Tennant vs. Matt Smith fanbases at all has it! I think they made an inspired casting choice with Michele.

I like the 'young' cast very much, although it's a little odd to think that in ten years' time they'll still be there, with all the relationships quite unchanged.

I suspect anyone who knows Montalbano through the younger cast may be a bit shocked by the shorter, fatter, balder and much more muscled version of Salvo, not to mention the taller, blonder Mimi!

I think the closest young/old match has been Fazio. I didn't think Catarella looked much younger!

I fear that Welsh Lad will not find Luca Zingaretti as much to his taste as the young one - still I look forward to his comments on that.

I've seen pictures of older Salvo. He's a good deal different from Michele but there we are. "Artistic licence darling" as actors say.... or they do in my stereotype anyway

**Off to google old Mimě.

@ Jeff - Lots of people find Luca attractive actually - me included. He's not obviously as handsome as Michele but he definitely has 'a certain something' when you see him acting.

The Fazio actors were great matches for each other indeed.

That part also served to show us once again that Catarella isn't a complete buffoon

There's a policeman called Gallo in Montalbano and Young Montalbano... is he meant to be the same person as the Gallo in YM looks a bit older than the one on Montalbano???

I find Luca strangely attractive; I can see why all the woman characters fall for him.

I like the younger Livia better than the older version, partly because her words fit with the movement of her lips! Quite why they had to dub Katharina Bohm so abominably is a mystery.

Yes, that puzzled me too. The fact that 'young' Gallo is deperate to drive fast, like 'old' Gallo, makes me think they're meant to be the same person.

Maybe Montalbano Gallo is the son of Young Montalbano Gallo and the wanting to drive fast thing is a family trait??

I noticed the Gallo thing too - very odd.

I like the way the Italians 'sing' when they speak e.g. the way Salvo calls 'Catareeelllaaaaa' - the intonation goes up and then down.

People say that the Welsh do that too!

Placido Domingo once said that Wales was Italy in the rain
I guess as an objective spaniard he could see some similarities.

And the Danes say it about the Swedes and Norwegians.

There will be a third Livia coming along soon. I don't think the role is a great one. A lot of it consists of getting on/off the airport bus or not going on holiday with Salvo.

What's wrong with this one? And how much disbelief can we suspend on the Young/Old front?

Maybe she's from Italy by way of Gallifrey??

My favourite moment was when Salvo turned up at the circus, there was a yellow clown juggling 3 balls, then he dropped one and kept juggling with 2, then he dropped one of those as well, but he kept on juggling!

Well I watched my first Montalbano the Younger last Saturday, and loved it.
I did the usual 'But he's got hair! ' but was very quickly sucked into the story.
The young pups did a great job. But I was a tad confused as to whether I was watching Gallo or his dad.

The reason we have a new Livia is because this series takes place about 15 years or so after Young Montalbano and the actress who played her with Zingaretti in the first eight episodes was either not available or did not want to play the part anymore so they have recast her.

I suspect we may have another father/son or other some such. Just read a Montalbano where Gallo says he loves driving fast as he wasn't allowed a pedal car..dad couldn't afford one.

This may well be mentioned elsewhere in this thread but it's a long thread and search hasn't been much help.

Does anyone know why they used an actress who could not speak Italian for Livia and then dubbed her part?

It seems an extraordinary thing to do for what is, really, quite a minor (in terms of screen time) part.

IIRC, the series was co-funded by a Scandinavian broadcaster (can't remember which one), so perhaps she was part of the deal?
