Both shows are on Saturdays. Saturday 21:00 is pretty much the designated BBC4 slot for subtitled European drama.

I still love the meandering nature of this show - had a few questions about certain aspects of this week's plot but think I basically understand it now. Catarella was acting crazy even for him what with the throwing himself on the bonnet of Mentalbaldo's car! ”

Thanks for that, appreciated! I've only seen the one episode so far but I like the look of it so am going to stick with it.

On timeshift as usual, given the episode summary I'll expect more 'off the books' work from Salvo tonight.

I'm sure some bits get cut out, either that or the editing is just odd, it seems to jump from one day or part of a day to another without explanation..

Best programme on TV .

But it does seem to be filmed in a ghost town ?

But hey , I get to practice my Italian, learn something and enjoy the light hearted , but intriguing plots and characters.

Weshould have more fortiegn language programmes instead of all the facile Yank offerings.

Only one new one left, next week!

I absolutely love this show, it's like being on holiday with those beautiful settings.

I agree, best thing on telly!

The plots are byzantine. I sometimes can't get to sleep Saturday nights for my mind trying to make it make sense. But the characters are great.

How many deaths tonight? I lost track.

Still good telly though.

Yes, there are scenes cut out, I have had some of the DVDs from Italy and as extras they gave cut scenes and some of them were very interesting. I don't know why they were cut as they made the plots a bit clearer as to what he was doing and why he was going to certain places. They were quite short in length would have only added two or three minutes to the episode.

We have got Livia back next week.

Last night's episode was a pick-up for me and I quite enjoyed it, though I have come to the conclusion that Young Montalbano seemed altogether more slick and exciting.

As for comments about ghost town. Have people ever been in a non-tourist southern italian town in the middle of the day? It's exactly like that! Dusty and deserted.
I think they just need to film more in the evening when these places are more lively.

I'm sure there have been several Montalbano episodes where he's gone out in the evening, yet there are never any passers-by. He mostly drives to and from his house or the police station. Maybe this is normal in Sicily - I'm more familiar with the Alto Adige where the towns and villages are quite bustling.

Still prefer the "old" Montalbano. Young Montalbano had far too much exposition and never seemed to just let the story tell itself. Last night's episode also showed how much better the plots are when Salvo isn't being pursued by a beautiful yet devious woman.

Actually, he was a security guard for the bank next door. Just happened to be passing at the wrong time.

I thought this was a better episode, the one last week I found a bit boring and haven't watched it through.

Getting the timelines of YM and IM a bit blurred here but has anybody noticed, when talking about money, how they gradually went from the old lira to the current Euros?

I don't think it was gradual. YM would have been still Lira, obviously. Proper Montalbano switched between the last series and this one, I think. I imagine they reflected the time when each series was filmed, so as to remain up to date.

Series 1-4 of Montalbano were broadcast in Italy between 1999 and 2002 but Series 5 wasn't show until 2005

Italy switched to the Euro in 2002

The scene with him was more like something out of The Killing or Spiral.

Good trailer for Borgen at the end though

I think sadly I have gone a little off Luca

I'm tired of seeing the same locations used week after week.

And Mimi just isn't a patch on his predecessor.

There's no sparkle between Livia and Montalbano.

Sorry just bored now I'm glad it's finished .....for a while ...

Sorry, I don't know him, I'm guessing I'm supposed to though.

Oh well I was quite enjoying tonight's episode until the end.
Some cracking looking women, Loredana(sp?), murdered villain's ex girlfriend and beach teenager with the odd facial expressions.
Mimi's urrrm, urrrm description of what happened on the Sofa with the suspect was so amusing I watched it 4 times.

There must be some older women in Sicily that wear polyester, pinnies and have their hair in headscarves or it would appear that no women over the age of 25 and size 10 are allowed on the island...

Is it just me but does Mimi look more French than Italian? I know you can't really generalise but he has changed a lot with that tache and looks to me like a Frenchman! Sacre Bleu!

Strange ending to a season...the relationship between livia and salvo needs to go one way or another...having seen both series one after another i think i lean a bit towards Young Montalbano...
Looking forward to the return of Borgen though..

I wish they'd get rid of Livia completely. Just as the main story gets going Livia pops up to interrupt it. Irrelevant padding of the worst kind that messes up an otherwise generally excellent show. Caterella is also becoming increasingly annoying.
