I didn't dislike 'Young Montalbano' but I think it missed a trick. When I first heard about it, I envisaged it would be an interesting insight into how Montalbano became Montalbano. It would be set in a different place and there would be a different set of characters. Instead it very quickly established the same set-up as the 'grown up' series - and just became a pale imitation of it.

The younger Livia was a lot nicer though...

While I liked YM for what it was I don't even see how the YM became the OM physically. By comparison Endeavour does a good job showing how Morse became Morse both physically and character wise.

I'd never seen any of YM prior to tonight and, I enjoyed it, but I do agree that I found it a little surprising how rapidly it morphed into something so similar and indeed familiar to what has come before. I was expecting far more variation. I'll stick with it as I enjoyed it, but I now wonder what degree of repetition might occur with story lines and so on.

What a let-down after the excellent Cordon - a lot of fluffy nonsense, I certainly won't be watching again.

You might want to give it a little bit longer. I know I wasn't that convinced when I first saw Montalbano, but it grew on me. A friend of mine described it as being like 'Bergerac with s better climate' but it's a lot more layered than it's given credit for.

Of course, you could just ignore me and stop watching it.

The final episode of Young Montalbano is on next Saturday. Does anyone know what will be in the Subtitled Drama slot after that?

Yes, a Swedish police series called Beck.

Random episodes or beginning from the start?

After the White Lioness was over there was a quick trail for Beck and the v/o person said there would be 5 films/episodes.

In the first Season as broadcast on Swedish tv there were 8 episodes so either BBC4 will be showing the first 5 of those 8 or just 8 random ones

BBC4 will be showing the 2015 Season 5 of 'Beck' which is comprised of four films.

I wonder if that's just a test run to see if people like the show. If they do well
then BBC4 might buy the whole series.

They did something similar with Montalbano, two episodes (Excursion to Tindari and Montalbano's Crocquettes) were shown in December 2008 and subquently started the series from the beginning in 2012

I miss old Bandy. I'd have him, new Livia, new Mimi, old Catarella and old Fazio.

Seasons 1-3 of 'Beck' were released intermittently between 1997 and 2007.

Each Season consisted of 8 films.

Season 4 was released in 2009 and only consisted of 2 films.

And then we have Season 5, with 4 films, released in 2015.

I have Seasons 3, and 4, on DVD, which were released with English subtitles, as a result of which I am a fan of the series, and of the actor Mikael Persbrandt.

The potential problem with starting with Series 5 is that the viewer is unaware of the background, and nature, of the lead characters revealed in the earlier films.

At least with the two 'Inspector Montalbano' films used as a trial they were from the first series.

According to next week's Radio Times not only is there going to be a second series of Young Montalbano but there's also going to be a new series of Mentalbaldo

Series 2 of Young Montalbano is another six episodes and it is expected to air on Italian TV this autumn, so we should get it after that perhaps later this year or early next year.

Luca made some more Montalbano earlier this year, I'm not sure whether there are two or four episodes as there are only two books written that have not been filmed. These are expected on Italian TV sometime next year, so it will be a while before we get them.

Mimi's face was very funny last night when the circus owner was saying he'd had an affair with a local woman and that these things often happen (something like that)

I love Mimi - young and older.

A decent return for the younger Montalbano.

Some questions do arise though - when will he start losing his hair, is Livia really that bad a cook. And was I the only one who thought that Mimi looked like Basil Fawlty with that bandaged head.

I also felt the bank manager was far more beautiful than the lover whom Fazio and Catarella were so besotted with.

A good antidote to the wind and rain outside.

It was enjoyable but the whole story line of Livia going to Canada seemed a bit stupid as we knew she would not leave. Wish I had Livia's boss as she seems to get a lot of holiday to visit Montalbano.

One problem I have with this series is the full head of hair that he has. Surely it should be receding some by now.

Yet another example of why Livia should be kicked into touch and big-hair Montalbano should start shagging bank managers.
Also : Mimi : needs to be killed ASAP, to save the world from him.
