A rather sombre end to the series and an explanation as to why Salvo stayed in Vigata rather than move to Genoa. I got the impression his heart wasn't in it anyway.
I think Catarella could find an alternative career as poet. The whole episode seemed a lot darker and less jokey than the others especially with the subject matter. I guessed the daughter had something to do with it as soon as I saw her - she just looked a wrong'un. |

I loved the very emotional ending of last night's Montalbano. I was moved by it. I have been to South East Sicily a few times which is where I first heard of Montalbano before they showed the old Montalbano internationally. I also learned of Borsellino and Falcone and their assassinations and how devastated Sicily was. The last time I was there I revisited all the Montalbano locations paying my own little homage.
All of what I feel about Sicily came together in this episode, I thought it was brilliantly evocative of the place and its character. It didn't trivialise what happened to Falcone just to tap into cheap emotion. Instead it told us that Montalbano has a beating heart and it beats for Sicily and Vigata (which is fictional), for his home and his own folk. He is a dedicated and devoted public servant. He knows he can make a difference and that matters to him and to others. His own feelings for Livia are less consequential. Of course in real life she would just move to be with him, but for the purposes of fiction they agree to spend their lives together apart. It's so beautiful and so sad. I also love Caterella. His comic moments and his love for Montalbano are not something you'd ever ever ever see in a UK or US or Scandi cop show. Can you imagine any of those male characters crying because their boss might relocate, or writing a poem for him? Indeed all his men love him, Mimi, Fazio, Fazio's dad. It's Sicily. It's fabulous. |

We enjoyed last night's episode, even though it was a much darker episode than we have had in the past.
Although, early on both of us thought the daughter was up to no good, but we were not sure until we saw her being interviewed later on. Although the stories centre around Salvo, Fazio and Mimi, one must mention Catarella - his comic timing is just right. The ending was good, bringing in fact and fiction together. I remember the bombing of the magistrates. It was a sad time for Sicily and for Italy in general. Have never trusted Berlusconi - just my personal opinion. Salvo's heart is always in Vigata and Sicily.. What we also like, is the interaction between the plain-clothes detectives and the Carabinieri ( or are they the Local Police). |

Here's a Wiki article about the background to that explosion:-
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giovanni_Falcone Brusca detonated the device by remote control from a small outbuilding on a hill to the right of the highway on 23 May 1992. Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo and police officers Rocco Dicillo, Antonio Montinaro and Vito Schifani were killed in the blast. The explosion was so powerful that it registered on local earthquake monitors. |

After seeing the documentary on him yesterday my sole hope is that he lives long enough to finish off Montalbano's story. He looks younger than ninety but I think the cigarettes made his voice deep. The story about his dad dying was a bit sad.
The reporter seemed a bit in awe of him. |

Was the Swedish model (Karen I think) in the fashion house the blond woman "old" Montalbano is friendly with? The one who drives fast.

I'm going to miss this so much, it's the only one of the "subtitled" detective dramas I enjoy. I've seen all the "Young" episodes now but only a few of the "Old" ones so I might seek out them from the beginning. Hopefully there'll be a third series

Good news for fans of 'old' Montalbano.
The two new episodes that Luca made last year are being shown on Italian TV starting today (29 Feb), so we should have them soon. In this series he has yet another new Livia and finally they have cast an Italian actress, so there will be no more badly dubbed Livia and we won't have anything to moan about! The new Livia is Sonia Bergamasco - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0073950/ I've also heard that he is going to make another two episodes this year starting around April. |

late to the party - had all 6 episodes to watch so been binge watching - I really loved this season. It seemed to flesh out the regular characters a bit more.
did they only interview bandy actors for Young Montalbano ?
