I have a long standing insurance with Policy Administration for £2.99 per month insuring me for anyone making unauthorised calls on my phone if it were to be stolen. It doesn't cover the phone itself. This company do a "hard sell" and say I could be 1000s of £ out of pocket if someone stole the phone and phoned abroad. i think this is unrealistic and unnecessary and there must be another way to prevent unauthorised use such as locking the Sim. am I missing something here?

If you report your phone stolen the provider can just block the sim. Some phones allow you to remotely block them. I think there are also apps that enable blocking.
You don't say which phone you have, but smart phones allow you to password lock the phone as well..
You have been paying £35 a year for a fairly pointless insurance IMO.
I take it you are on contract? as for PAYG it would be totally pointless.

Yes I am on a contract with an HTC Desire, I need to find out more about blocking and cancel the insurance. I tried to cancel it recently but they kept phoning me and hassling me so I gave in in the end.

Just cancel your direct debit without phoning them, then either block their number or just reject the calls.....
