How do you know, if you switch him off or are asleep?
Funny how people who claim to dislike Steve and not listen to him always seem to know exactly what he's done each day ... Ctrl+Alt+Del is well worth a try. Failing that, just minimise the window... |

He's just had a whole load deleted from the LBC thread, so I came here to see what he's been saying - to find him a goner!

How do you know? Do you know him personally?
Have you not considered that maybe it's an act? An act that is, apparently, extremely popular? I'd rather listen to a real person than just a crap "act" Some old queen having a bitch. Its so boring and unengaging. |

An act or not. Doesn't matter. He is bloody awful and needs to be replaced.

I'd rather listen to a real person than just a crap "act" Some old queen having a bitch. Its so boring and unengaging. Steve Allen hosts a radio programme six days per week in the early morning. Those six days equal to twelve hours where this man has to talk incessantly with only a break when one of his friends joins the conversation. I honestly think he has a skill that not many of us could equal, I couldn't chatter on for that length of time and I suspect that not many others could, either. He says things that make me squirm, he says things that make me nod my head in agreement and he also says things that I think in my head but haven't got the guts to say outloud. I'll start to knock him when I can do a better job of presenting a lighthearted couple of hours, I know that I couldn't and I suspect that the majority couldn't either. He's a skilled broadcaster, love him or hate him, I can't think of many people who could fill twelve hours of inane chatter as well as Steve does. |

It's strange how posters are always demanding the removal of shows/presenters that they happen to dislike. If they cleared everything I loathe off TV there'd be hardly enough left for a couple of hours viewing each day.

Presumably the same people who go to fish restaurants and complain there's no steak on the menu. That's why LBC have a podcast service and the BBC have the iPlayer. You can choose what you want to listen to, when you want to listen to it. |

Quite. It's amazing how some posters think they have the right to dictate radio stations' schedules according to their personal taste.

Try the World Service or Radio 4. News-heavy? Morning Reports on Five Live. Or, neither of the above? Talk Sport. Alternatively, instead of bitching on about an "old queen", how about you suggest a format and a presenter who you think would suit your tastes? |

Nope, you're still not getting the point. He is a real person, who happens to be employed by a station that wants an act. That is how talk radio works.

Tell me, assuming you've listened to his show before, what's so unintelligent about Mike Graham? |

In retrospect Mapperley, you must say that the way you've worded that looks like a cheap dig at talkSPORT even if you weren't intending it. "Intelligent speech radio?" "News-heavy?" "Neither of the above? talkSPORT." To me it looks for all the world like you're suggesting that talkSPORT is neither intelligent nor news-heavy, given the neither of the above comment, but hey if you weren't meaning to suggest that then I apologise for thinking that you were.
I just find it funny that a lot of your posts on here are to correct or criticise posters who have a pop at various BBC stations or presenters, yet you're not averse to doing exactly the same thing you criticise other people for when it comes to talkSPORT. I find it a little hypocritical. |

Oh I read what you've written alright. While it's admirable that you're keen to defend Steve Allen in this case, and BBC stations and presenters in many other cases, you still managed to shoehorn in an obvious dig at talkSPORT here and it's not for the first time either. But you insist that you didn't. Whatever you say then.

Here's where I am. What I object to is posters who mindlessly attack presenters from any station with personal name calling, because they dislike their tone, their voice or their well-know act. In talk radio terms, these attacks are invariably on Five Live presenters, since it's the station that employs the biggest number of on air staff. I happen to think that many of these comments are nasty, spiteful and - in a public forum - borderline defamatory. When I've defended such presenters, it's been because I believe the criticism they've got isn't justified. And I usually give my reasons why I believe that. When I've had a dig at Talk Sport, it is usually (but not always) in relation to claims that the station and some of its presenters are far better than anything offered elsewhere on speech radio. Then there is the (in my view) spurious assumption that Talk Sport should somehow have the right to dictate what Five Live does and doesn't do. It had a complaint on this rejected by the BBC Trust and now the RadioCentre (albeit not representing TalkSport) is doing much the same in the Service Licence consultation. And then, when I suggest that other stations or shows might just, maybe, be better than those offered by TalkSport, I get shot down again. Even when I've provided lists of shows on UK and US radio for people to try out. So like I say, carry on the conspiracy theories all you like. I'll continue to defend those parts of the radio industry which I think are worth defending, be them BBC, commercial, UK or Worldwide. |

Hello to you. I'm seriously interested in learning about other talk radio stations as I only know of FiveLive, Talksport and LBC. I cannot abide incessant talk about sport or I'd listen to my local station and a reason that I left Talksport, I can endure FiveLive when Nolan's presenting but apart from that I'm an avid LBC listener. Having said that, some of their new presenters leave a lot to be desired, especially late night listening so if you can recommend another talk station where sport isn't the biggest influence, I'd be eternally grateful. I'm quite fed up with scanning the stations and finding nothing.
Thank you in anticipation. x Many, many US cities have local talk based breakfast and drive shows on local stations. Many are pretty bland, but there are some gems. You'll have to put up with quite a bit of right wing influence on the majority - but it's not all based on hatred! In my opinion, Don Imus on WABC continues to provide one of the best listens on the dial. The guy on before him - DougMcIntyre is pretty good too. I'd also recommend a bit of Elliot in the Morning on Washington's DC101 (a rock-banter show, if you can imagine it), Bobby Ojay on Memphis' WDIA (The FUN Morning Show!), and a scattering of Australian talk shows too. Once you invest in an internet radio, it becomes a very long list very quickly! But it'll give you more of an insight into what talk radio is capable of outside the confines of the UK, the general rules of balance we have - and the relatively narrow choice. |

I listened to Steve Allen for five years. Every day he was on.
I loved his attacks on our often braindead celebs. For about two years he'd been slagging off Corrie star Kym Marsh. Saying really personal things about her which I have to say I agreed with. ![]() He said on record, 'I don't like her'. Then about four months ago, he announced he was gonna interview Kym on his show. My mouth dropped. The hypocrisy of it. I emailed him and told him I'd never listen to his show again. He never replies to emails but he replied to this one. I didn't read it though. I find him a disgusting hypocrite. |

I'll continue to defend those parts of the radio industry which I think are worth defending, be them BBC, commercial, UK or Worldwide. However, I do think you are regularly unnecessarily unfair when it comes to talkSPORT. I think it's more than a bit harsh to claim that there is little of substance on that station and to dismiss shows, interviews and phone-ins out of hand as you have done before. I disagree with your view that US radio's sports coverage is inherently better than talkSPORT, as for a start I think it's very hard to compare like with like given the differences in styles, remits and sports covered. It is like comparing apples to oranges. I would also dispute your view that all topical phone-ins host have to look to "wind up" their audience to attract calls and interest, as you have said about 606. I've also noticed that you rarely defend talkSPORT presenters when they are the subject of similar "hatchet job" threads on here in the same manner that you would BBC presenters. And if some people, as I do, belive certain programmes offered by talkSPORT are better than anything else of that genre on speech radio, make it reasonably clear that this that is only their personal opinion and justify why they believe what they've stated, why have a dig at them for this? That not a big conspiracy from me, just what I have observed when you have mentioned talkSPORT within your otherwise incisive and interesting posts on here. You have in the past made the kind of comments about talkSPORT that you would chastise others for making if they were aimed at other stations, which is why I felt you were doing so again in this discussion. You clearly have a problem with some of the issues that UTV management have raised with Radio 5 Live (which is fine and indeed I don't disagree with some of your opinions here), and it seems to me that this has lead to you firing a few barbs the way of talkSPORT as a station and their personnel which in my opinion is unfair to the individuals there and unbecoming of you given your dislike for these types of comments when aimed elsewhere. |

Who are you poppet? Steve Allen? I'm sorry but we don't know who you are! We haven't got a clue. You need to get yourself a proper job stacking shelves instead of dragging that weary carcass 'round LBC with all those other marys.
PS. I love him. Even if he is a hefty-hideway and a bit bikey. |

I like him. His rapid-fire insults towards Z-list celebs always makes me laugh.
