iPod problem

Hi folks. I am just new to the boards and was wondering if anyone could help me out.

I purchased a 20GB iPod last Saturday and am having some problems with it. I have been powering up the iPod overnight, even when there is juice left in it. One of the problems I'm encountering is that, even after leaving it charging for 8-9 hours, the battery icon is still showing the 'charging ' icon rather than the 'charged' icon. The other more worrying problem is that again, after leaving it charging overnight, the iPod occasionally switches itself off completely. It sounds like the hard drive is whirring when the Apple logo appears and then goes dead.

To rectify the problem, I have to plug it back into the wall socket, restore it and then detach it from the wall. Sometimes this will give me around 8 hours of music and sometimes it will still 'go dead' when I'm listing to it 20 minutes later. Do you think this is a battery problem or a hard drive problem?

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again for your time

I have an iPod and what yours is doing sounds a bit dodgy. The battery meter is notoriously poor and even when it claims to be empty you can still get a good 2 hours out of it. When fully charged mine says it is still half charged, although it does rectify itself within a few minutes. However, it shouldn't just keep switching itself off so I'm inclined to think it's some sort of hard drive problem. But don't take my word for it as I'm not entirely sure

Thanks for your response TH14. I have repackaged the iPod and decided to send it back. I purchased it from Amazon who have an excellent returns policy, so hopefully I'll be united with my new iPod in the next few weeks.
Thanks again for taking the time to point me in the right direction
