Great thread Rob. Now I can post some of my fave 60's BIG hits without you telling me off!!

Elusive Butterfly - Bob Lind. Great song also done by Val Doonican and both were in the charts at the same time! Both peaked at No.5 too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6727qgmRbY

Terry - Twinkle. Not very good quality really on any of the Youtube postings of this song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sADBdkcS7_w

Bobby Goldsboro - Honey. No.2 in 1968 AND 1975.

might do that anyway!

tbh after the success of the 'rare' 60's thread im surprised no one thought of doing one for the better known hits. theres certainly an interest in 60's stuff.

Yeah it was quite obvious to do one for the big hits really!!! We need a 70's one too.

With regard to Honey, someone on FB said that it's the only song to reach No.2 twice in the exact same version by the same artist. Maybe Rob or someone else can confirm if that's in fact true but I can't think of another. Albatross sprung to my mind but that reached No.1 and No.2.

Needle in a Haystack is my fave song mentioned in this thread so far. Trying to find my top 3 songs of the 60s could be like finding a needle in a haystack!

Seriously though, in potential ascending order they are:

3 Mary Hopkin:- Those Were the Days
2 Beatles:- I Feel Fine
1 Beach Boys:- Do It Again

Choosing a favourite sixties song would be impossible. Favourites by artist is a bit easier.

Get Back - The Beatles

Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones
Could have chosen Paint It Black but that's already been mentioned.

Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks
Could have chosen Days or Autumn Almanac.

My 1st single was Lily the Pink by Scaffold I was young at the time.

The Rare 60's Classics Thread has clearly demonstrated just how many brilliant sixties tracks were not big hits (or not hits at all), and I think this thread will clearly demonstrate just how many brilliant sixties tracks actually were big hits.

I’ve decided to devote my first few posts to this thread to my favourite UK Number One singles from each year of the sixties.

Here are my five favourite UK Number One singles from the year 1960 (in order of preference):-

1. Johnny Kidd and the Pirates – Shakin’ All Over
Along with Cliff Richard’s Move It (1958) and Vince Taylor’s Brand New Cadillac (1959), Shakin’ All Over has got to be the greatest British rock ‘n’ roll record of the pre-Beatles era.

2. The Everly Brothers - Cathy's Clown
Classic track from imho the greatest musical duo of all time.

3. The Shadows - Apache
I wonder how peeved Cliff was that his own backing group had replaced him at Number One?

4. Anthony Newley - Why?
A very cheesy track, but one I like it a great deal. A real guilty pleasure.

5. Eddie Cochran - Three Steps to Heaven
Posthumous UK Number One single for one of the greats of fifties rock ‘n’ roll, who was killed in a car crash in Wiltshire on April 17th 1960.

And here’s the full list of UK Number One singles from that year:-

Emile Ford and the Checkmates - What Do You Want to Make Those Eyes at Me For? (18 December 1959 - 6 weeks at no. 1)

Michael Holliday - Starry Eyed (29 January 1960 - 1 week)

Anthony Newley – Why? (5 February 1960 - 4 weeks)

Adam Faith - Poor Me (4 March 1960 - 2)

Johnny Preston - Running Bear (17 March 1960 - 2 weeks)

Lonnie Donegan - My Old Man's a Dustman (31 March 1960 - 4 weeks)

Anthony Newley - Do You Mind? (28 April 1960 - 1 week)

The Everly Brothers - Cathy's Clown (5 May 1960 - 7 weeks)

Eddie Cochran - Three Steps to Heaven (23 June 1960 - 2 weeks)

Jimmy Jones - Good Timin' (7 July 1960 - 3 weeks)

Cliff Richard and the Shadows - Please Don't Tease (28 July 1960 - 1 week)

Johnny Kidd and The Pirates - Shakin' All Over (4 August 1960 - 1 week)

Cliff Richard and the Shadows - Please Don't Tease (11 August 1960 - 2 weeks)

The Shadows - Apache (25 August 1960 - 5 weeks)

Ricky Valance - Tell Laura I Love Her (29 September 1960 - 3 week)

Roy Orbison - Only the Lonely (20 October 1960- 2 weeks)

Elvis Presley - It's Now or Never (3 November 1960 - 8 weeks)

Cliff Richard and the Shadows - I Love You (29 December 1960 - 2 weeks)

I’ve decided to devote my first few posts to this thread to my favourite UK Number One singles from each year of the sixties.
Here are my five favourite UK Number One singles from the year 1961 (in order of preference):-

1. Danny Williams - Moon River
Beautiful, just beautiful. My favourite version of what is imho one of the greatest songs ever written.

2. John Leyton - Johnny Remember Me
Classic Joe Meek production. Fantastic track.

3. Elvis Presley - Little Sister
My favourite Elvis track of the sixties, and afaic the only one from that decade that comes anywhere close to the marvellous music he’d recorded in the fifties.

4. The Everly Brothers - Ebony Eyes
To say this song is corny is a real understatement and had anyone else recorded it I would utterly detest it. However, it was recorded by the Everly Brothers, who could sing the phone book and make it sound wonderful, so naturally I absolutely love this track!

5. Del Shannon – Runaway
After the death of the great Roy Orbison, there was speculation that the almost as wonderful Del Shannon would replace him in the Traveling Wilburys, but then Del died too. Some things are just not meant to be.

And here’s the full list of UK Number One singles from that year:-

Johnny Tillotson - Poetry in Motion (12 January 1961 - 2 weeks at no. 1)

Elvis Presley - Are You Lonesome Tonight? (26 January 1961 - 4 weeks)

Petula Clark - Sailor (23 February 1961 - 1 week)

The Everly Brothers - Walk Right Back / Ebony Eyes (2 March 1961 - 3 weeks)

Elvis Presley - Wooden Heart (23 March 1961 - 6 weeks)

The Marcels - Blue Moon (4 May 1961 - 2 weeks)

Floyd Cramer - On the Rebound (18 May 1961 - 1 week)

The Temperance Seven - You're Driving Me Crazy (25 May 1961 - 1 week)

Elvis Presley - Surrender (1 June 1961 - 4 weeks)

Del Shannon - Runaway (29 June 1961 - 3 weeks)

The Everly Brothers - Temptation (20 July 1961 - 2 weeks)

Eden Kane - Well I Ask You (3 August 1961 - 1 week)

Helen Shapiro - You Don't Know (10 August 1961 - 3 weeks)

John Leyton - Johnny Remember Me (31 August 1961 - 3 weeks)

Shirley Bassey - Reach for the Stars / Climb Ev'ry Mountain (21 September 1961 - 1 week)

John Leyton - Johnny Remember Me (28 September 1961 - 1 week)

The Shadows - Kon-Tiki (5 October 1961 - 1 week)

The Highwaymen - Michael (12 October 1961 - 1 week)

Helen Shapiro - Walkin' Back to Happiness (19 October 1961 - 3 weeks)

Elvis Presley - Little Sister / (Marie's the Name) His Latest Flame (9 November 1961 - 4 weeks)

Frankie Vaughan - Tower of Strength (7 December 1961 - 3 weeks)

Danny Williams - Moon River (28 December 1961 - 2 weeks)

I adore "Little Sister". For me it's the best thing Elvis recorded after coming out of the army. I love the guitar sound on this track.

The track it shared the No. 1 position with as a Double A-side is very good too:-
