Bill Savill and his orchestra produces a very professional and full sound which is a pleasure to listen to. There is a lot of scope and variety in the sound, which isn't always possible with some of the specialist bands. There are a lot of good tunes here.
The letter from the BBC shows that they were not going to tolerate any backchat from their orchestras! I imagine the poducer was covering his own back in case anyone came back to him over the quality of the broadcasts. Perhaps he was also annoyed at the lack of respect being shown to his profession by Bill not fully appreciating the technical requirements of the rehersal. Either way the letter itself is a good example of a steel fist in a velvet glove - polite and friendly, but completely uncompromising! It would have taken a lot of consideration and time to get the tone just right.

Carlos Romanos (accessible through the MWYW page) gives a programme of predominantly Latin-American music, lovingly arranged for his 45 piece orchestra whilst Hugh James is a typical theatre orchestra of yesteryear. I kept in touch with him until he died and he left me his orchestral library in his will. You can find his programme via the front page of the site, accompanied by an article on his career.

Thank you for making another of Hugh James' broadcasts available. It always amazes me to find out that the BBC took a lot of pursuading to have this orchestra on MWYW. It must rank as one of the best and most versatile orchestras available.
There were only a few song here that I already knew, but the broadcast was very enjoyable.

I've always thought that 'Primo Scala' was an unusual sounding name! Interesting that he was a Londoner, and not a denizen of far flung and exotic Madrid!
It is a good sounding collection of songs, and played very well on the multiple accordians.
There is one BBC typo that I noticed on your list. Shorty Allen's 'Rock and Roll Waltz' is down as just 'Rock and Roll'. It is one of a couple of numbers that were repeated from the 12th June broadcast. You will recall that it was a very popular song, made famous by Kate Starr's recording a few months previously. My mother had the 78 record, and I remember it fondly.
(Actually it is called 'The Rock and Roll Waltz' but it often gets shortened.)
