people complain that ITV Digital was better because you were allowed to choose your 6 favourite channels as a basic package - but don't forget they basically owned DTT, which was effectively a pay tv platform then, so there were more pay channels to choose from.

Top-Up merely offers people who miss their pay channels the choice to get a few of them back - yes, some of the timeshares suck, and of course it would be great to have your favourite channels from the service running 24hrs, but that's just not possible on the space they have - it's an informed decision as to whether you take up top-up as you are made aware of the service limitations in advance.

The channel choice is a bit thin - I rarely stray from Uk Gold, E4 and Discovery, and it would be great to see the likes of Sky One, Nick/Paramount and eurosport, and they may come as part of their anticipated extra capacity... but even so, I watch these top-up channels more than i do the FTA ones, with the exception of abc1...

which brings us on to the flawed argument that TUTV has stolen all the available space on DTT. Remember - nobody wanted the space - there were no great imminent channel launches that were then gazumped by the arrival of Top-up. And as for "no more space" - since the launch of Top-Up, we have seen the arrival of Ideal World, abc1, ITV3 is coming in just over a month, and More4 is due to launch whenever they do... so it seems that in the "no space" argument, where there's a will, there's a way.

Top-Up channels just show repeats? - no they don't - alot of UKTV content is BBC archive, but people want to see it again and so pay for it - by contrast much of E4's content is new... "but it appears on C4 eventually" - most of the pay tv content appears on terrestrial at some point - all sky one's shows appear on BBC2, C4 and five at some point... all the films shown on Sky Movies and Sky Box Office appear on terrestrial at some point, yet Sky Digital are still doing quite well. It's called choice.

sorry that this excessively long post loops bak over previous arguments, but seeing "Top-Up TV is a rip-off" emblazened at the top of the forum board got me riled. It isn't a rip-off - it's £7.99 a month for those who choose to pay it and who want to watch their content. I pay 3 times that for my internet connection, so I can see hopeless threads like this. The service hasn't stopped new services launching. It hasn't forced any services off - granted with the exception of Tv Travel Shop, although not a formidable departure.

So NTL is £30./month, does that include every single channel (porn and whatever else) as you seem to include this type of channel in tutv subscription”

Payperview service channel included but I am not saying you can see them without paying extra.fronrow channel and sky box office channel is on sky.Frontrow on cable.

Adult selection pay perview channels see your dealer. But yeh pay extra.Down to choice though.

What I am saying is it is better value to get the base pack at 19.50 with sky then pay 17.99 for topuptv eleven shoehorned channels.for the sake of 2 pounds would you go to topuptv to save your dear two pounds or pay just a little bit extra and go with ntl or telewest or sky?

Dont forget with ntl sky or telewest you get over forty channels in full and not shoe horned all for 19.50 With ntl 10 pound base and 9.50 line rental.Sky would obviously be less but you do need a full functional line so would be paying seperate telephone company.

Topuptv is a rip off.A sheer rip off.I would never NEVER pay 17.99 or even 7.99 for shoe horned unpopular channels.I dont watch e4 and i dont even watch Discovery.

Just take a look at the links I have given on, Is it time to make the switch? Then you will see.Sign up now to one of them and you could be watching a good movie on sky movies or be watching the latest installment of Simpsons.Or if that is not your cup of tea.New show Silverwood which has just started over on Skyone.

Catch the latest news with cnn or watch Conan or Tonight show with Jay Leno on weekends with cnbc.New series of Lilo and stitch on Disney channel or watch sports action on sky sports.

There is better value else where if you just know where to look.It is not nessasarly about how easy it is to join, but how much choice they give you and for what price.

Price and choice, decent choice, not just get sent a viewing card and ram it in your ex digital box and then just base the assumption on just phone up and ram a card in your ex digital box that Topuptv is wonderful and great.

No point in posting links to services that a) We already know b) Cant use at all.
You would'nt pay to use TUTV? Thats fine with me, You find it a rip off? Then dont use it (You dont anyway!!) You have another way to access digital tv? Use it!!!
If you a satellite user why are you slagging off Digital Terrestrial?

Please dont start accusing those appossed to topuptv,Anti digital terrestrial.I support DTT.The best that DTT can offer.Topuptv does not satisfy everyone. This comes as no surprise to me and I am sure to topuptv themselves.

First of all you have the gnomes. They make me and my mates bend.It frightens my friends young nephew.

Secondly why oh why spend 17.99 for shoehorned channels? They call them popular channels. As if,yeh right.I only watch UKTV Gold and that is once a week.Everything else they offer I dont watch it.

ps I might come across as strong but this is because I know there are better services.

Ring up get sent a viewing card and ram it in to your ex digital box and oh "This is the best thing in the World"Sorry mate but that dont cut mustard with I.

Digital tv is much better than analogue. It is cleaner and clearer.it also offers better cd like sound.I am Pro Digital

I appologise if you are under the impression I am attacking anyone who is anti TUTV and calling them anti digital, that was not my point.
I agree not everyone will suit TUTV, but to if you cant get SKY, Ntl and Telewest then its TUTV or Freeview only.

I dont pay 17.99 as I pointed out earlier, for E4, Uk Gold etc etc I dont want porn on my tv, so as I said earlier 26p a day for some more tv is worth it. My waistline appreciates the money spent on tv than a bar of chocolate, which is what it works out to be a day!!!

Top Up Tv is run by the same people who created ITV digital and we all know what happened to that. I do thonk the channels should be better especially for £8

It goes down in legend.

Base pack for ntl is 10 pound.Would one rather have 8 pounds for ten shoehorned channels or ten pounds for over forty full time channels including radio stations, guest channels and more?

I also agree that for 8 pounds, the channels should be better.

so if anyone still wants topuptv after this drawn out debate then here is the link

www.topuptv.com

But make sure that you check out my links to sky and NTL/telewest before doing so.

ITV Digital went down because of the vast amount they paid out for football and the encryption system was hacked even on launch.

I would like to see more channels on TUTV and less retricted straming too.

I heard the football deal broke the camels back. There were many problems with itv digital, first of all not many could recieve. So very limited coverage.

secondly I dont think people were ready to change to digital. We were okey with our Sky analogue and analogue tv.

thirdly Paying outright is not the most popular.I would rather pay monthly than pay an entire year in advance.

Unfortunately Freeview have very little room for extension of the Topuptv pay tv zone.
Unless everyone was prepared to kick American broadcast company butt back to US of A.
If they were willing to say goodbye to proposed ITV3 which will be the same type of channel as ITV2.

Personally saying goodbye to these rubbish channels would be a good deal and topuptv could then extend the pay tv zone further and maybe being better value for money.

To be honest. TUTV I think isn't amazingly brilliant at all. I mean the timeshare thing sounds completely crap. The only really rubbish timeshare channel freeview has is FTN. I think TUTV is taking up space and I think it could be used better. I mean people think when they get freeview it is all free. TUTV is also confusing a lot of people (including my grandpa lol!!!) about freeview.

Topuptv has confused and abused DTT and DTT Freeviewers.Their whole propaganda has been affective and has been proved.
Why you all subscribe top topuptv and not sky/ntl/telewest is beyond me.I cant imagine it.I simply would feel sick.Topuptv is sickening to the very bone.Abc1 may be a free channel but the way I see it,Freeview has got worse. It pulled itself together.well I take that back.

It is falling.Even though Freeview boxes are selling well, this does not mean customers are buying for the channels.they are simply wanting multi channel as opposed to five channels.

Itv3 only has a licence with DTT until 1st JAnuary 2005 so it will either be renewed or scrapped.Months from November to Jan will be crucial for viewer figures.

i personally feel it will be scrapped. And I think it should.

So now lets end this debate. The debate could be debated for milleniar.

So everyone lets call it a day.

As I cant get sky , because of not being able to have an external dish/aerial i might give ntl a ring about subscribing.

It shouldnt take them long to dig through about 10 miles of uncabled country side to get to my house

My final defence of TUTV:

I can't have Sky/Ntl/Telewest so its my only way of getting extra channels!!!
So for us who are unable to sign with the three "Gods" of tv then its what we have to go for.
Yes it may be expensive, yes it may be restricted but some dont have the choice you list, so therefore its TUTV or nothing extra.
I understand where your coming from but do you understand people like me dont get the fantastic choice you can have.

No, the thread doesn't end just because you say so

When are you going to declare on your status box that you are a Sky employee? The number of links to Sky (and occassionally cable- though that is only for appearances) that you have posted is excessive.

TUTV are going to change their channel line up. They are trying to get Eurosport and a few other channels. I am led to believe there will be a big shake up too regarding the hours that some channels are broadcast.

I like having TUTV but I think it could be better, I know it will get better.

I still think TUTV is poor value compared to Ondigital.

However I like all the new free channels - I like ABC1
smashmouth
30-09-2004
yeah, but top-up is com[pletely different to Ondigital - Ondigital launched DTT and could do what they wanted - TUTV works alongside freeview and alows viewers to top up their channel choice with a selection of the most popular primary channels, and it's not that expensive at all - if you feel it is, then you don't subscribe - simple. I like Top-Up and i am very glad it's available - and i could get ntl or sky, but i still chose top-up!
and just to re-iterate - the only space top-up is taking up is the space that would be left by blank screens...

While I can't see how a completely voluntary payment of £7.99 a month can be called a "rip-off", I wouldn't waste the price of five pints of real ale (at my local prices) on a set of channels that offer nothing I cannot already get for free.

However, if Eurosport joined TopUP, I might well consider a subscription.

New angle on all of this.

I personally only think something is a rip-off when I'm forced to pay for it (i.e. in the case of a near monopoly, essential services or tax etc) but nothing is a ripoff when you have a choice in paying for it.

Don't want to pay for it? Then don't, then it's not ripping you off.

Stu
