3% for supermarket supply yes, but quality pub food will work around a 40% margin.

It's very high considering the billions also spent on advertising. I liken almost every every Apple launch as being Nouvelle cuisine.

On the other hand Android has lots of 'eat all you want' features, especially at the low end.
WM7, somewhere in the middle?

I bet it'll be crap. Techcrunch says its running android 2.2 with an amazon skin and apps. People who haven't a clue will probably buy it.

The only good thing is that it might bring down the price of other tablets.

Blackberry have just announced a $150 price cut for the Playbook (hate the name) in the US so there could well be a price war on the horizon.

Amazon's first tablet doesn't need to be an iPad killer in terms of specs or performance but they do have huge customer reach so this should stimulate the market for mid-range devices for people who don't want a £50 toy don't want to spend £500 either.

Aren't we positive today?

As the techcrunch article suggests they aren't selling an Android tablet they're selling an Amazon tablet. Since the primary difference between Android 2.2 and Android 3 is the UI it doesn't really matter that they aren't using 3 because quite simply they're building a new interface anyway. If new interface could be amazing it could beat Google and Apple at their own game, who knows have you tried it yet?

Currently there isn't a great many apps made to be compatible for Android tablets but if Amazon can shift enough units it will make the fact they're using an old version of Android irrelevant, developers will switch focus to that platform and it could make all the cheapo Android 2.x tablets kicking around very appealing indeed.

The techcrunch looked to me 99% made up.

Inspired from the more qualified rumour of the 7" to be released September/October.
I found it quite laughably Nostradamus like.

This is the thing. This device is likely to compete with Barnes & Noble's Nook Color, which has been really popular in the US.

So will this tablet replace the kindle then?

It looks like it is going to be branded as a Kindle but a Kindle tablet and Kindle e-reader are totally different things so I cannot see one replacing the other. The beauty of the current Kindle is that it has a good battery life and e-ink, two things that a tablet won't have.

If it was down to me I'd keep the Kindle and tablet brands linked but separate otherwise you risk confusing people.

"And there's Google's problem. Its relationship with its users is too like Microsoft's. Instead it needs to be more like Amazon."
Advocating closed devices?

Seems to me Android is where it is being very much open, just like any normal computer.
Restricted consuming and lots of spending is not what buyers have bought into

Unless you bought into Steve Jobs vision of the Universe. Restricted consuming and lots of spending is exactly what iTunes is about.

It's where Amazon has a slight problem.

Too closed and it loses its attraction. Its why that double screen is a possibility in that it still needs a really good reason to buy.

Just because its base OS is Android doesn't mean it has to be open. If this Amazon tablet is happening and running Android, they're likely to lock it in to their own bookstore and own Amazon App Store. Yes, like B&N's Nook Color, it will be rootable, but B&N's book and app store requires you to have their firmware on it. People who buy one and root it have to get apps from Android Market, not all of which will be compatible.

For ordinary members of the public (the mass Kindle audience), buying books and apps from the on device store which are optimised for the device is the simplest option for them to get the best experience. Amazon curate their Android app store in the same way that Apple do. It's not open like Android Market.

Seems that the Amazon 7" kindle tablet is maybe to use an AFFS+ display. Its an advancement on IPS "offering superior performance and colour gamut with high luminosity." It's other feature is that it works outdoors too.

Mirasol and Pixel QI screens are supposedly not ready/available in sufficient quantity yet.
Pixel Qi do state their 10" panel is 'in mass production' so someone might be stock piling them for a coming launch..

Their press event is next Wednesday 28th September..

I'm assuming it is for their android colour Kindle.
How underwhelming will it be?

I've gone off the idea now, my kindle and Vaio do a good job, I'd just be buying for the sake of it; I'll wait and see what is about next year, 10" screen and android or Windows based with at least 64Gb of storage.

Given the amount of hype about it being an "iPad killer" then the world is sure to be disappointed. If it's more of a "Kindle+" with a colour touchscreen and some Android support then it could be interesting but I doubt I'll be ditching my current Kindle for it.

This tablet is a delivery mechanism for their books, movies, music and other content.
It gives owners an ultra simple way of buying from amazon and accessing that content. For a lot of people it does exactly what they need.

I bet most people don't mess about with Calibre and just use the Kindle e-book reader for books and newspapers bought through amazon. This will be similar. With Amazon Prime membership you can also instantly stream videos etc.

It does show that 'big brand' goods benefit from all of the free advertising.
Reality has it that Archos have made waves with their G2 tablets.

£200 now gets you a decent quality Android 3.2 tablet which means they have finally reached sane 'netbook pricing'. Obviously without the costs of Intel or Windows a £100 won't going rate is quite possible long term.

Asus Transformer with keyboard costs around £300. Great performance, 15 hours battery life and takes standard USB and SD cards. That leaves you £100 for a 64GB memory card.
