Can someone try to explain why i see much faster speeds using my iphone 4 in tethered mode.

Not tethered. Speedtest on Phone

Are Orange selectively disabling HSDPA/UPA unless tethered?
Anyone else that can try this out for me?

Don't Orange now route their iPad's/tethering through T-Mobile's 3G network instead of their own?? Or am i wrong lol?

Nope, you're quite right - Orange iPad and Orange mobile broadband (e.g. dongles etc) connections are routed through T-Mobile's 3G network (iirc one or two other Orange things are as well), so if they're classing tethering as a "mobile broadband" connection then I'd say that would explain the difference in speeds.

Yeah Orange mobile BB goes through the MBNL network, not Orange's old legacy network which they still plan to mostly decommission last I heard.

Those are the typical speeds you would get on Three / T-mobile. Orange speeds are normally about 1/2 that.

I can't help thinking it's funny how a year or so ago Orange had the campaign saying they had the biggest and best 3G network and did everything they could to seem to try to slam the 3/MBNL network - now they're quietly killing there own to use the MBNL instead! Mustn't have been so good after all!

What you mean the one where they were found to be in breach under the rules of 'truthfulness' by the advertising standards authority?

Where Orange acknowledged that they knew that Hutchison 3G UK had the largest geographical coverage, not Orange and that the ASA noted generally accepted industry research showed that Orange did not have greatest geographical coverage aswell.

Therefore the advertisement was found to be a untruthful and the ASA ordered that it was not to be repeated.

I'm not sure what you guys are complaining about, the 3 & T-Mobile 3G coverage is crap in Edinburgh. Orange/Voda are much better. I also seem to be getting much better data speeds through my Orange iPhone hotspot than with my T-Mobile 7.2mb usb modem.

My gripe is that they throttle the iphone on it's own, connection speed.

If i remember rightly the ASA siding with who it believed had measured their network in the most conventional way. I'd say it's pretty close between them.

Also Orange are NOT decommissioning the sites anymore as they are needed by MBNL.
