It is available from AAISP but its not cheap at £12 p/m
http://www.aaisp.net/broadband-phoneline.html what is the point in paying £12 per month for a phone line that you can't do anything with when you can get one for a tenner with free evening and weekend calls? Even if like me you don't use it |

You would think with so many other phone/IPS companies now out there that BT would not incress there prices so offen so they could still complete with the others.

I have a BT phone line, but I don't pay anywhere near the high prices quoted on here.
I pay £120 up front for 12 months line rental and £5 per month for their Option One Broadband on an 18 month contract. However, I cannot afford their ridiculous call charges, and even if I could, I wouldn't use them when I can use 18185 for 5p per call for an unlimited duration. I do use BT because I live in a rural area and their broadband is at least reliable and constant, which is more than I have had from any other broadband provider. |

I appreciate that additional costs are incurred trying to maintain the service and this has to be met somewhere.
It's good to see that they want to bring jobs back to the UK too, but that also comes with a cost. I still think however they are choosing a bad time to increase prices. Their 'phone service is also expensive. 12.5p connection fee on all chargeable calls, that's before you get to speak! |

To get money off you got to pay £120 right off, how many people on low wages or even a pension can afford that? The utility companies charge people more for using a pre-payment meter, so again the poorer people suffers. I could pay my line rental all at once, but why the hell should I give them money for a service before I get it? Quote:

I use my mobile more these days, I do use the phone at the weekends now and again and sometimes in the evenings.Quote:

Since most broadband providers use the BT network, it should not be much different. Reliable and constant are not words I would use to describe BT.

I don't even know why they need the extra money, don't they litterally make a million pounds in ten seconds or something?

I dont see the situation as any different from say motor or home insurance. I either pay the money up front for a years service and it's cheaper, or I pay monthly as I receive the service and it's more expensive. It's hardly a new concept.
Paying line rental in advance is paying for something before you use it., i pay my line rental after the month, I get billed for my line rental and my calls after I used the service, the same with my mobile. |

But with insurance you are getting a service for those 12 months, your car or home are covered.

I pay £5 every week towards the BT bill with the BT payment card. I may think of upping what I pay a week due to the new BT price increses. My sister is on a monthly BT payment option. Option one is no good to me for I go over the 10gb monthly download limit. Im glad to be on BT Infinity now. My sisters on option one but shes only a light internet user and tents to use the internet on her Iphone more. Darren |

The only difference I can see is perhaps in the cancellation terms, however, in general terms its the same principle |

Am I the only one who thinks it's wrong to call it line rental when you do not have the option of buying a line? That way yiou would not have to pay rental for it, only problem is any repairs would have to be paid for.
Okay it's probably not the best way to go, but it would be nice to have a choice. |

They own the line and rent it to you, its not for sale. I own houses I rent to people, the houses are not for sale and they have no option to buy.

Can you imagine the cost of buying your own line? And how would you maintain it if it broke? You couldn't dig up the road as you're not a utility company.
And if you paid BT, it would be an absolute fortune! Finally, who would you sell the line to if you moved? Or would you reel it up and take it with you? |

There are houses for sale though. Anyone with the money has the option to buy a house. With telephone companies, no one has the option just to buy the line.

I'm wondering how BT can justify the call set-up fee, surely the line rental covers the cost of maintaining the line to my property and any associated telephone exchange costs, so why am I forced to pay a set-up fee (now 13.1p before I say a word).

They are both services. They are both payed in advance of the service being delivered.
With insurance, if I pay for 12 months cover in January, I am paying for Junes insurance cover in January even though I wont receive the service until June. The only difference I can see is perhaps in the cancellation terms, however, in general terms its the same principle I see your point to a certain degree, but if you paying monthly insurance, you can still claim a month after you started paying. ok you still got to pay the rest of the year. I still think it is again a way for people with money to things cheaper and people on low wages or even on benefits who can't afford to p[ay out right are subsidising those who can, just like pre=pay on gas electric and also to be pre-pay on mobile phone |

So they do no work on your networks? No repairs?
things was different years ago, when i lived with my parents and the Post office done the phones, we had a problem with the phone cracking all the time. My brother phoned them up as the phone was in his name and they was around that same day, found the problem in a couple of hours, (water in a junction box) and fixed it. Now when they eventually comes, they have 2 or more vans, with one person in each van, they sit around chatting for a hour, then with all their modern equipment, they say they can't find the fault and then vanish. Took over 6 months for them to sort out a mates problem. Saying that, another mate phoned BT a few months back and had someone there in half a hour and he found the problem and fixed it in a hour. Tell a lie, he did not find the problem, I found the problem the day before and my mate pointed it out to him when he arrived. |

Okay it's probably not the best way to go, but it would be nice to have a choice. Saying that I doubt there is much inside the exchange these days, our old exchange if you look through the window still got some of the old mechanical stuff that was used in the old pulse dialling days. Not used now, but a lot of cables including mine is still connected via that building. Talking of which do the old pulse dialling still work? i got a old phone here, may try it and see. |
