ITV should be banned from broadcasting movies full stop. They cut them to pieces, stick the bloody news in the middle of it, and they never show them in the right ratio!
I love you and I want to have your babies

Oh, and Five are just as bad.

It will be interesting to see how film content on freeview changes after the NBC/Universal deal with Sky. As Sky will have sole right to broadcast their back catalouge of movies ITV and co. may have an interesting time finding new films to broadcast and old one to re-broadcast.

If you look at the average month on the ITV set of channels there seems to be at least three or four Universal films either repeated for nth time or still fairly new.

If this trend continues you will have to have either a DVD library or interney based TV to get around some of it.

Aren't I a doom and gloom merchant
What does this mean. Will some of the big movie premiers in the future not be on free to air tv

what movies premiers are likely to be shown next year?

Sky has agreed a deal with NBC/Universal to have sole access to their back catalouge of movies and will have first choice of premiers.

The impact over time is yet to be seen but films like Mamma Mia, Back to the Future etc. will no longer be seen on freeview (according other posts in related forums) and Sky will/may not allow anyone else to broadcast Universal premiers in the future.

We don't know as of yet and we don't know if Sky will try to make other deals that will give them control over film broadcasts due to the ruling that said they didn't have an monoply because of netflicks etc.

At this time this is still to some degree speculation as we just don't what the long tern effect will be but if Sky want to get more subscribers they will have a big advantage if the do get total sole rights for new films from Universal.

Well if thats true Sky should not be allowed to do this. Lets hope this is just a rumour.

They can show it whenever they like. I don't watch films on Five anyway. They're rarely in their right ratio anyway.

That'll be no loss as ITV always censor the BTTF films and then the 2.35:1 films are never broadcast properly.

I really don't know why people think Sky's deal with Universal will have any impact on terrestrial television. Sky have bought the rights for their PAY platform to have the premieres of Universal films just a few months after they finish in the cinema. This covers Sky's movie channels and other owned PAY channels.

If Universal didn't have a deal with a terrestrial broadcaster for free TV broadcasts, that would be a massive error on their part and there's no way in hell one of the worlds biggest movie studios won't have a deal in place with a terrestrial free to air broadcaster. Currently that deal is with ITV but some Universal films have been popping up on Channel 4 recently, so perhaps they will have a new deal with them soon?

Does anyone know when ITV's contract with Universal ends?

The Universal deal was completed months ago, would ITV not have stopped showing them or started becoming less reliant on them? Also, Universal have released one good film that hasn't already been premièred (Ted) and I don't think they have the TV rights for that anyway....

Sky do have the TV rights to TED and all future Universal release up until the end of their contract.

Ted was a Media Rights Capital film distributed by Universal. I don't know about pay TV rights, but Bruno (another Media Rights Capital film distributed by Universal) received it's terrestrial première on Channel 4 rather than ITV, which is what makes me question whether Universal have TV rights or not...

Prince of Persia is shocking... shockingly bad. How To Train Your Dragon is a real cracker though.

They'll no doubt censor it for an afternoon screening anyway

Surely they'd just stick it in an 8PM slot like they do with Pirates of The Caribbean?

You don't have to be a kid to appreciate the wonderful job Disney/Dreamworks do. There's something in these films for all ages, they are universal.

As a big kid myself I'm a vey happy bunny over the films.

In regards to my earlier post on Sky and Universal I'm just repeating what has already been posted elsewhere and was not aware that there are licences for freeview and pay tv, it makes sense but I didn't know this, so therefore that changes the whole picture over films.

Just have to wait and see how things develop. And sorry for getting so many people wound up.

Death to smoochy is awesome, not a premiere by any stretch, pretty sure it had some film four involvement

Tim Burton's Alice is shite, unfortunately. I was expecting Alice in Wonderland, not Lord of the Rings.

Apparently Disney's Tangled will be shown this year on... ITV.

So the real big clash on Xmas Day won't be Downton Abbey v Call the Midwife, Corrie v EastEnders or any of that nonsense, but Up v Tangled after The Queen's Speech.
