As per Radio Times, the BBC2 showing of Borderline on Sunday 29th at 6am is a UK TV premiere...sixty-three years after the film was made.

so, and heres what I was thinking about this morning, is this the largest gap between a film being made and its premier on tv? - i'm setting a cut off point of 1936 as thats roughly when tv started to take off [yes, yes, i know thats not strictly true ok ]

63 years seems reasonable as the longest - but their must be other box office successes of the past that have for whatever reason, not been shown cut or uncut on tv.

Does anyone know the reason why both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises(on Sky only) have been shown on UK TV, but not The Dark Knight.

Maybe they're scared the Daily Mail will accuse them of glamorising knife crime?

I'm sure Christopher Nolan wrote and directed the film purely to come up with new and exciting ways to increase knife crime in his home country...

Yep it has but can't find it anywhere on a Sky Go or their Sky Store. They can't have the rights else they would have the trilogy on ago like they have with other film series - Back to The Future, Bond et al

This is a half-decent film, so it deserves better than an 11pm premiere time.

Far more so than...

The film with the crappiest title of all time!

It isn't the largest gap. On the morning of Saturday 1 June BBC2 showed a triple bill of old RKO films, all of which were TV premieres, as per Radio Times - Curtain Call (1940), its sequel Foorlight Fever (1941) and Sing and Like It (1934). So the bar is now set at seventy-nine years.

The oldest film BBC2 has shown on Saturday or Sunday mornings in their old film slot this year has been The Gay Diplomat from 1931, not a premiere apparently but no one I know remembers a previous showing in at least the last thirty years. As far as I know, eighty-two years between film production and TV broadcast on a terrestrial channel may be a record. The only other contenders I can think of are Channel 4's broadcasts of The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Intolerance (1916) in 1993. The occasional silent has turned up on Film 4 though.

No doubt there are plenty of early talkies, let alone silents, that have never been shown on terrestrial TV.
