According to TVbytheNumbers, Sons of Anarchy premiered to 4.94m which is fantastic for FX, the show has really grown its ratings and it's a decent performer for 5USA, think they should premiere season 4 in January although that may depend on the contract 5USA has.

There is a BFI screening on Thursday next week, so the following Saturday would have made sense.

Yeah, it's strange how there now seems to be an inquest into what BBC One has in its schedules against certain ITV1 shows.
As rzt pointed out tonight, Downton Abbey gets lots of mentions on this thread, but it also seems to have built up some kind of sacred cow status in media circles, far more than Doc Martin (which gets roughly the same audience figures on the same channel, sometimes in the same Sunday 9pm slot). I don't know why it's a sacred cow to the media. I know Julian Fellowes is flavour of the month in media circles, and it's never been the done thing to criticise anything Maggie Smith is involved in, but I don't think these things explain why it's fiercely protected by the press.

The BBC and ITV should be able to schedule any show they wish at whatever time that they choose to do so. I can't stand these media driven 'Show A vs. Show B' stories. :yawn:
Are we going to get to a point where if BBC1/ITV1 are showing a big show/rival genre, then the other has to show some little watched programme that only gets 2m viewers?

More importantly the demos (which advertising rates are decided on) were all up as well. It got a 2.5 in the 18-49 demo. I suspect in a few weeks time some of the broadcast nets will be looking at that number with envy.

In these enlightened times with PVRs and iPlayer anyone who wants to watch both won't have much of a problem in doing so.

Pretty much as most of us on this thread had been expecting until the recent talk of it starting in September.
Means the penultimate episode of Merlin would be on Xmas Eve and the season finale would be on New Year's Eve unless they mess about with the scheduling.
the BBC has been good recently, Doctor Who, Torchwood, now Spooks and Merlin. Planet Dinosaur also looks like its going to be worth a watch, however I will mis the dinosaurs chasing or being chased by Hannah Spearritt.

I see Celebrity Masterchef sneaks into the Saturday schedules at 6.10pm on Sat 17th Sept - I don't think the BBC have really got a clue with what they're doing with that.

A shame they aren't launching Merlin a week earlier as it could really benefit from the Doctor Who lead in. Having the finale on Xmas Eve would work really well too, New Year's Eve seems a waste. If they don't start it until the 8th then I agree with Brekkie that they should shift the finale to NYD where it could also do really well.
On another note, The X Factor USA is confirmed to be airing on ITV2 from Thursday 21 September at 8pm, continuing the following night at 9pm, meaning that it'll be airing just one day after it's aired in the US. I'm glad they're airing it then as it would have been silly to delay it until the New Year.
Also, does anyone know how Minute To Win It did on ITV2 last night? I wasn't expecting much from it but I caught it last night and it's a surprisingly fun show so I hope it's doing OK.

Merlin paired with the Doctor Who finale gives them a big weekend and an October 1 launch also sets them up nicely for a Christmas Eve finale of Merlin which would be a strong addition to the Christmas Eve schedule and potentially expose Merlin to an even bigger audience. Although I suppose the problem with that would be that I'm guessing Strictly must also be launching proper October 1 (it launched around that time last year didn't it?) so God knows how they'd schedule all of that...

7:15 - Strictly Come Dancing
8:15 - Merlin
That pushes Merlin pretty late and Doctor Who earlier then its been so far for part two of the series (I suppose you could flip Strictly and Doctor Who though). Plus I guess there's Secret Fortune (will that still be on come October?) and Casualty to fit in as well.

Its on inbetween Emmerdale and Corrie with no real competition. My personal prediction is 6.1m but I think the second show will completely collapse.

If the penultimate episode of Merlin falls on Christmas Eve then they could put the finale on on Boxing Day (the Monday), say 6,45pm to get a 15 minute head start on Emmerdale. If Merlin can cope with going up against X Factor, then it could certainly handle Emmerdale during the ("let's all watch the BBC") Christmas season. After all, Dr Who always goes up against Emmerdale on Christmas Day and always trounces it in the ratings.
If Secret Fortune takes no breaks then the series will end on October 8th.

As for Red or Black, they made a few small changes to the eidting and presentaation of the show tonight. Nothing mind-blowing but it was slightly more watchable. As for ratings, I'm thinking:
RoB (1): 5.7m
Corrie: 8.5m
RoB (2): 5.4m
Village SOS: 2.9m
WDYTYA: 3.8m

Yeah, it's a wise decision to have it as close to the US airing as possible. I don't think there'd be any point airing it 6 months later once every knows who the winner is. Plus, airing it at the same time as when they usually air American Idol probably wouldn't have been a good idea. The only slightly bad thing about that Thursday slot is that the first hour clashes against the ITV1 soap block but I don't think they could've scheduled it anywhere else, really. It'll mean an overload of TXF on the channel in the next 3 months but weighing up the pros and cons of airing it now or delayed, the first option is better. Also considering how well TXF-related programming do on ITV2, it seems some people can't get enough of it, so it should be fine co-existing with the UK version at the same time of the year.
From a ratings perspective, ITV2's looking strong this Autumn with a schedule including: Celebrity Juice, TOWIE, IAC: Now, Peter Andre, Xtra Factor, TXF repeats, TXF USA (should do well). And then, they've got Hell's Kitchen USA and The Vampire Diaries getting pretty good numbers in the Monday/Tuesday 9pm slots, as well as some of the movies too. What they need now is a new homegrown drama and new British sitcom to take off, two genres they're currently lacking in. If they can get two of those through in the next year, they'd have a really strong ratings lineup.
