The Strictly line-up is as you'd expect - nobody with a decent career does this kind of thing. That's the case 99.9% of the time whether it's Big Brother, I'm A Celeb, Dancing On Ice or Celeb X Factor. But that has never been the key driver, it's about the mix of people and the personalities and the tabloid fodder. Holly Valance has fairly piled on the pounds since she married her billionaire and The Daily Mail like to do articles on that. Expect wardrobe to squeeze the poor girl into dresses that are too tight and the DM to lap it up! Edwina Currie is an obvious attempt at Ann Widdecombe - a bit unimaginative but I daresay the DM will still be interested and perhaps in Sven's ex as well. Alex Jones can talk about it all the time on The One Show. Rory will be funny. Lulu will be a pain. Harry will end up dating his pro partner. All in all, that line-up should probably work perfectly well for them. Quote:
From a ratings perspective, ITV2's looking strong this Autumn with a schedule including: Celebrity Juice, TOWIE, IAC: Now, Peter Andre, Xtra Factor, TXF repeats, TXF USA (should do well). And then, they've got Hell's Kitchen USA and The Vampire Diaries getting pretty good numbers in the Monday/Tuesday 9pm slots, as well as some of the movies too. What they need now is a new homegrown drama and new British sitcom to take off, two genres they're currently lacking in. If they can get two of those through in the next year, they'd have a really strong ratings lineup.
As for British scripted, I used to think they should try harder. But I'm not so sure now. To me, ITV2 seems to be an entertainment channel. It's unfortunate that Sky have launched Sky Atlantic because I'd have said something like that would have been perfect for ITV. Done under a different brand for pay TV, building a line-up of US imports and UK original scripted content. Keeping ITV2 focussed on its entertainment output. Quote:
Why?
Much easier competition than Monday and a lot of press coverage in the last two days. Both Red or Black shows should be hitting 6m tonight. I thought we'd all just about agreed on that?! I'll be surprised if it holds up through the week. The first show may get some help tonight but the second one will be down, IMO. Press coverage works if you can tune in for something - so autotune-gate on X Factor had no effect. Gamu being sent home had no effect. Katie Waissel staying in... bingo. Unless people were tuning in to see Dec say that "due to unforseen circumstances, we've only got 7 contestants tonight", I'm not sure that it'll make much difference. Particularly when most come with comment on how the show is slumping in the ratings! |

So will I. don't get me wrong i love the show i just think the BBC Should done better then a Daybreak presenter. And i still think it should have had 1 big name star but i suppose with the cuts happening with the BBC At the moment that won't happen for a long time.
). DOI had Comedy Dave on their last series and Radio 1 plugged the show massively for weeks.

ITV2 has tried comedy and drama and it hasn't worked with the exception of Celebrity Juice. their only real success was Secret Diary of the Call Girl which only survived because it had US funding from Showtime.
ITV3 does well and it has broaden its slate to include documentaries but I think it needs a few more original content, original drama and comedy would be ideal but I imagine ITV1 would be afraid it would dent them unless scheduled on a football or filler night like Tuesdays. ITV4 is essentially ITV Sport but I think it would benefit from US imports that skewed more male. |

Just because its bad doesnt mean it wont get better ratings. When has quality ever been related to ratings?

ok the Strictly Come Dancing line up (having now looked it up)
Alex Jones - I think we have all heard of her, nice safe chioce of a BBC employee there Anita Dobson - Former EE actress maybe the first actress to appear on the show who doesnt return to EastEnders afterwards, but ive heard of her Audley Harrison - Olympic Gold medallist and boxer, it rings a bell. Chelsee Healey - apparntly she is on Waterloo Road whilst not a true BBC employee like Alex Jones its a safe BBC choice. Daniel Lobb - Former professional tennis player and TV presenter, I read in this thread he is on Daybreak, but him I have not heard of. However he looks like he might get some older women swooning. Edwina Currie - Ive heard of her. Harry Judd - According to DS he is from McFly who I have heard of, and I can think of one member of this thread who will be pleased to se ehim on the show. Holly Valance - a return to Ramsay Street maybe on the cards, if what is true for EE actors holds true for Neighbours stars, still looking good but you cant help but think she is reaching for anything to avoid a return to Ramsay Street. Jason Donovan - Star of ITV 1 soap Echo Beach, ive heard of him to. Lulu - I think she will do really well on the show, good for her, ive also heard of her. Nancy Dell’Olio - the name rings a bell, not sure who she is however. Robbie Savage - According to DS he is a footballer, that explains why I dont know who he is. Rory Bremner - I guess he should take back any jokes he may have made about John Sargent, shame there is nothing better he could be doing, a return to Mock the Week would be welcomed by me. Russell Grant - talking of John Sargent. In conculsion, whilst there are nonames that are bigger than you would expect this is not a bad line up, ive heard of the vast majorality of them, and few are total nobodies, expect the Waterloo Road girl and the McFly guy. |

A shame they aren't launching Merlin a week earlier as it could really benefit from the Doctor Who lead in. Having the finale on Xmas Eve would work really well too, New Year's Eve seems a waste. If they don't start it until the 8th then I agree with Brekkie that they should shift the finale to NYD where it could also do really well.
Still, there's lots of interesting possibilities with Merlin at Christmas. It's definitely worth a good slot on one of the big days - but knowing the BBC at Christmas, it'll probably wind up going out at lunchtime on the 27th or something. (Like one of the best offerings last Christmas: Just William. Probably the worst scheduling decision of the year from the BSI. And thats saying something. Anyway, I digress... )Quote:
Yeah, it's strange how there now seems to be an inquest into what BBC One has in its schedules against certain ITV1 shows.
As rzt pointed out tonight, Downton Abbey gets lots of mentions on this thread, but it also seems to have built up some kind of sacred cow status in media circles, far more than Doc Martin (which gets roughly the same audience figures on the same channel, sometimes in the same Sunday 9pm slot). I don't know why it's a sacred cow to the media. I know Julian Fellowes is flavour of the month in media circles, and it's never been the done thing to criticise anything Maggie Smith is involved in, but I don't think these things explain why it's fiercely protected by the press. |

I seem to remember Show Me The Funny having a Corrie lead-in for every episode and a more favourable 9pm timeslot with no EE clashes.

The 8pm show should be near 6m, a soap sandwich and poor competition. I would presume that Corrie would be up on Monday's figure due to poorer competition and that should give RoB a good chance to get a somewhere respectable figure. |

The first series of Downton Abbey was good so it may suffer from second series syndrome but I wouldn't surprise if it breaks 10-12m for the first episode. It's the sort of show loved by the broadsheets. It's a shame that Upstairs Downstairs was compared to it because that was good.
Doc Martin should return strongly especially as it's back in its Monday slot and with weak competition, I could see 7-8m. I think it will continue until Martin Clunes decides to end it, a final series would IMO be massive. |

In other news is that Simpsons number normal? It seems very high relative to the rest of the Channel 4 line-up...
Speaking of Hollyoaks it maybe time for some ratings analysis as I have seen a few posts saying it has been doing well recently. Ok it has been doing better relative to earlier this year, but year-on-year it is still down at the moment. Hollyoaks obviously brings in good demos though, so C4 will be looking to keep it on I would imagine. US Cable News - August
Demos in brackets
8pm: FNC - The O'Reilly Factor - 2,910,000m (679,000) * Up 7% (+5%) vs August 2010 CNN - Anderson Cooper 360 - 662,000 (219,000) * Up 47% (+74%) MSNBC - Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell - 817,000 (199,000) * Down 15% (-25%) 9pm: FNC - Hannity - 2,088,000 (532,000 * Down 1% (-3%) MSNBC - The Rachel Maddow Show - 925,000 (279,000) * Up 12% (+21%) CNN - Piers Morgan Tonight - 750,000 (227,000) * Up 37% (+52%) 10pm: FNC - On The Record with Greta Van Susteren - 1,821,000 (457,000) * Up 2% (+1%) CNN - Anderson Cooper 360 - 750,000 (267,000) * Up 34% (+55%) MSNBC - The Ed Show - 731,000 (220,000 * Up 37% (+8%) Pretty heavy news month - Hurricane Irene and Libya pushing ratings up towards the end of the month. CNN benefitting most as well as gaining through moving Anderson Cooper into the 8pm slot. Lawrence O'Donnell was out for much of August so his numbers are lower than they otherwise would be. |

For Doc Martin, I think the Coronation Street lead-in is much stronger than the X Factor one...there will be little competition in that Monday 9pm slot - it should break 9m easy.
BBC1 has The Queen's Palaces hosted by Fiona Bruce. It has a very impressive trailer. Lots of "ooh" shots of wealth and decadence. Should do better than SMTF (hard for it to do worse) and be close to BBC1's default audience of 4m. But I still expect the Doc to at least match New Tricks' overnights. |

An predictions for the reality shows tomorrow and saturday?
Do you think the Big Brother Final tonight could make 4million? I think it could make 3.8million and a peak of maybe 4.5m. What will the launch of the normal series make? 6million? I think SCD could make a launch of 9million. And the X Factor making 11million. |

Channel 4 started airing season 18 of The Simpsons on Monday, which has only previously been shown once on C4 I think. So viewers, myself included, maybe more tempted to watch at the moment. Channel 4 usually air a new series of The Simpsons in the autumn but I think they have already aired this year's new series (series 18) earlier in the year - probably to try and boost Hollyoaks.

Awful for ROB considering the competition and it hurt Corrie in the process which was only 0.4m infront of Emmerdale.
Slightly low for the penultimate episode of CBB-I'd have expected around 2.5m. Not surprised at how low JLC was though. I see The Beat Goes On has been dropped after 2 episodes. Wise move as Banged Up Abroad pulled in a decent audience and share in the 11pm slot. Good night for Ch4. I didn't expect that much for the Bin Laden doc. |
