I think Red or Black will get a boost on Saturday, quite by how much is the $milllion question.

ITV1 will be pretty pleased that the £million was not won for the second night with such low ratings. WDYTYA did ok against the second part, neither show was a success though. Soaps return tonight to help out both main channels, I do expect ROB to get a boost for the next 3 evenings.

CBB final, BB launch and Million Pound Drop will give decent opposition to the main two channels.

Considering WDYTYA faced Corrie and didn't have much of a lead in, I'd say it had a good performance. Not sure Red Or Black will get much of a boost on Friday & Saturday though. But I've been wrong before.

Being beaten by Last Night of the Proms would round the week off nicely!

Very impressed by WDYTYA? last night considering it had Corrie to worry about for the first half hour. It's starting to look like the ITV 'event' schedule is dragging down Corrie now, which is about as obvious a sign of failure as is you can get.

Very good numbers for the Bin Laden documentary on Channel 4. I've not seen it yet, but it looks pretty impressive in how they gained access to the key players. I had a feeling that would do well - probably more so than the 9/11 docs as its a whole lot more contemporary and much fresher ground.

So RoB continues its decline further. I did think it would have remained stable from Monday due to the weak competition on BBC1. Frankly, the sooner its over, the better because I'm sick of talking/hearing about it.

As for everything else last night. Emmerdale did well and seems like the only show benefiting from the line up this week. Corrie is very isolated now in that 9-9.30pm slot. With RoB sinking everyday now it doesn't bode well for the rest of the week which is a shame as its been very good this week IMO. WDYTYA performed very well and wasn't affected by Corrie at all. CBB making no real impact. I can't see the "normal version" doing too well on the back of this. Who know's, it might Channel 5's first and last series?!

Solid night for BBC1, lowish in the 8pm hour and I don't see Village SOS returning, maybe it will return as a daytime format though. Very good for WDYTYA in the 9pm hour against tough competition, I think they'll be very pleased with that rating. Plus, its another show to add to the list that has beaten Red or Black so far. Poor for Red or Black, any other show against under 3m BBC competition would have increased, so for it to decrease should be raising alarm bells if it hasn't already. It is now also dragging Corrie down around it, which nearly ended up lower than Emmerdale!

BBC2 and Channel 4 benefited from BBC1's poor 8pm hour and Red or Black decreasing. Good 8pm hour for BBC2 while Channel 4 had a really good 2 and a half hours from 8pm with Location, Location, Location and the Bin Laden documentary. Location's rating should please them, after it seemed that the brand was heading for its exit with several under 2m ratings IIRC last year. Poor night for Channel 5. I think the CBB Final at most will be a mid 3m, I cannot see it performing any better than that, really. It wouldn't surprise me if it was lower than that, to be honest.

Oh, and if Red or Black's results show does not win its slot tonight, it will be axed, surely?

It is worth remembering that this could be worse for ITV. Cowell could have sold them a companion show for ITV2 - Redder or Blacker?

The thing with Location, Location, Location is you can never tell if its going to be a repeat as some times the catch up episodes seem to be listed as new.
Maybe last nights one was new.

Only just noticed CS was on last night, so WDYTYA did hold up quite well - I wonder did ratings suffer during CS and rose when ROB was on.

There are some tough timeslots coming up - I went high in the RPG for ROB live Saturday show following TXF, maybe I was too optimistic - but it could well be the highest of all epsiodes, we will see.

Based on what? The past 4 nights have been about level with, or even marginally up year-on-year, on Ultimate Big Brother, which aired on a channel with higher reach. See figs below...

As you can see both Sunday and Tuesday's shows were actually UP in terms of audience share on the nearest equivalent year-on-year, with UBB also approaching its finale around this time. Quite impressive I'd say. Although do note the figures above are for the first run and exclude +1. And before anyone blasts me by saying "you can't compare a Celebrity series with the Ultimate series..." Those that appeared on UBB were far more famous and well-known, certainly to the usual BB audience, than the likes of Bobby Sabel.

I think it's performed very well and certainly had a hugely favourable impact on Channel 5 in a difficult period for them normally. Expectations were raised early on due to the extraordinary ratings for the launch show, which were brought about by the massive marketing campaign and nonexistent competition on the night. But now rating in the low 2ms, it's exactly where many people including myself thought it would be for the regular highlights shows at this time of year. When it returns in January it could do even better, perhaps mid to high 2's, which would be awesome for C5 night after night.

As for it being the first and last series- we already know that both Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother will be returning in 2012. And I'll look forward to those, as the past few weeks have shown lots of promise. This series has been great in terms of production, very watchable. The only letdown has been the housemates- which haven't been the most entertaining bunch. It's certainly lacked many big moments that get people talking. Jedward have been consistently good value though, much to my surprise as I expected to dislike them. I look forward to watching what will surely be a runaway victory for them tonight.

Taking everything into account, I'm not expecting much more than about 3m for the finale and subsequent launch these next couple of nights. The launch should do a little better than the finale though, particularly if Pamela Anderson is going in, but it hasn't been well promoted outside of CBB so it could suffer because of that. The scheduling is also not ideal clashing partially with Corrie etc but the best they could do I suspect due to celebrity contracts being fixed.

Media Guardian article has various stats re Celebrity Big Brother, including:

"According to unofficial audience figures Channel 5 has delivered an average of 798,000 16- to 34-year-olds per show, a key demographic much sought after by advertisers, which is an average 19% share of that demographic in the time slot in which CBB airs."

Only if and when a UK broadcaster or broadcasters does a deal with the rights holders. Other nations have sorted this, the Brits are obviously driving a hard bargain. Strictly speaking, if nobody will pay what is asked, it won't be shown at all. Sky can't bid, of course.

In Australia, Home & Away: The Great Storm has been a ratings smash for Channel 7, averaging 1.2m for the first 3 nights of the week's gripping storyline. On average, each episode so far has rated around 18% higher than its equivalent episode last year. Tuesday's episode (1.21m) was up 26% on the equivalent Tuesday last year (0.96m).

Interestingly The X Factor is also rating a lot better for its second season than it did in its first, coming off the back of Australia's Got Talent's most watched season to date, averaging 1.53 million viewers for last night's Boot Camp instalment.

I think the deal was £80m over 2 years, extending to £200m over 5 years, so it is £40m per year. £40m per year. Big Brother is airing for approximately 12 weeks. 12 weeks x 7 days = 84 days.

Dock £5m off £40m for things like Bit on the Side etc etc.

£35m divided by 84 shows on Channel 5 = £417,000 for one hour.

Looking at Channel 4 Sales, Channel 5 reaches about a third of 16-34 viewers than ITV1, leading me to think that reaching a thousand 16-34 viewers costs an advertiser £30. It would have been £14, but something tells me that is way too low so have rounded it up a bit.

24 adverts during an hour show = 24 x £30 = £720 for 1,000 thousand 16-34. £720 x 798 = £574,560 per show in advertising.

I'm not sure if the above is even right... a lot depends on how much reaching a thousand 16-34 viewers costs an advertiser really...

While CBB has done well for Channel 5 (2 million plus ratings were not a daily/6 day week event pre CBB) they need to address it's impact on the rest of the schedule.

Firstly Saturdays were Law and Order SVU has been shunted around the schedule and lost viewers as a result. This could be even more of an issue when CSI:NY (thats the one that air on Saturdays isn't it?) returns early next year. Even if SVU is 'disposable', CSI:NY isn't, and can get over 2 million when scheduled directly after Casualty. Is there anyway CSI:NY could air between the end of CBB and start of (normal) BB, or do Channel 5 need to either move CSI:NY or axe Saturday Big Brother?

And more generally CBB doesn't seem to be benefiting the rest of the schedule. The 10pm slot doesn't help, it can only offer a lead in to an 11pm show. But then again 9pm would cause problems for other shows. But could more of an effort be made to use the BB at 10pm to develop new, younger skewing shows at 9pm when BB/CBB is on? Entertainment? Comedy? Reality? Young skewing factual? Soho Blues doesn't make use of having CBB following it, US Drama and Cowboy Builders don't need it, Gadget Show isn't using it. Time to take some risks, on one night a week at least IMO. Could Channel 5 develop a BB spin off to air at 8pm one night a week to act as a sandwich?

And finally The Bachelor. I'm sure CBB is helping it, but a carefully selected US drama could get the saming 1.1 million-ish rating in that slot. Do Channel 5 need to look for something capable of more in the Friday sandwich slot?

Essentially what I'm saying is that CBB does very well in it's slot, but is it really helping the rest of the channel? Could Channel 5 be getting better value from it by using it to boost other shows?

I'd definitely agree it hasn't brought much of a boost to the rest of the channel's output as of yet. Partly because there hasn't been the right commissions either side of it in a lot of cases - Friday nights excluded where there has been some success with The Bachelor (which crucially will skew younger than the US dramas you are talking about) - and partly I guess because it takes time to change viewer habits in a serious way. Now Channel 5 are finally getting decent numbers 'through the door' on a nightly basis, they do need to be working harder at keeping them with 5. There's a lot of quality there but not all of it is getting flagged up. And what's been happening on Saturday nights with SVU dying due to the late timeslot is regrettable and needs to be fixed urgently, I would suggest by dropping the Saturday night highlights show and extending Sunday's to 90 minutes.

On the plus side they seem to have learned their lesson with Law & Order: Criminal Intent getting a promotion from its usual 10pm slot to 9pm Wednesdays for this season. Definitely an improvement on NCIS reruns.

Yeah, I think Abbey will continue to rate really well. There's always a slight chance of a drama going tits up in its second series, but it's very slight, and if the ratings happen to fall, it would be due the scripts, not the fact Spooks is on BBC One.
