Champagne corks will be a-popping at ITV Towers today - they managed to hold second place or better all night!

Low for WDYTYA - I think it all depends on the personality involved, it was a decent enough episode, maybe some viewers thought Larry Lamb? or noticed he was ex-Eastenders. Big Brother decent enough, but expected more for a live eviction. Lewis held up well for ITV1.

If This is true The Ratings should be good.”

Typical Daily Mail...

So, a typically autumnal autumn, becoming potentially wintrier as we head into winter.

Bugger me...

only 2 more days to get your quips in - one probably as Fraud Squad will do quite well, although I preferred the Leslie Neilson version myself.......

Big Brother did good but I imagine Channel 4 dented it a little. JLC was on par with what he usually rates but it's only two episodes so it's not a big deal.

The 7pm News ratings is pathetic especially as you consider Garden ER went up 0.4m.

Ahh yes Police Squad - a bunch of bumbling imbeciles - who can't do right for doing wrong, of course nowadays they work behind the scenes from 6.00am to 8.30am on ITV1

It's a disaster isn't it Jonwo, enough to bring tears to my eyes! That share is just horrendous and totally unacceptable. I liked the idea that a fellow poster put forward a few weeks ago of trying to hit their news quota in prime by increasing the number of news updates. It's got to be better than starting primetime every single night on the worst possible note. Emma meanwhile could double up or alternate with Matt on the 5pm bulletin.

JLC didn't get the boost from CBB I'd expected which is disappointing, especially as Chris Moyles gave me false hope when the first thing I heard this morning was him talking about watching the show last night. But looking at some of the figures for Deadline Day on Sky Sports Drama, I mean News, that might have dented it slightly. And worth noting that at the same time Justin was on, Bit on the Side hit a new high with over 300,000 viewers which is excellent in 5* terms. Since it's only a two-parter it's not going to be too painful for them. It rated on a par with or better than some of the midweek movies which had previously occupied the slot.

Shocking for The Beat Goes On....but not surprising given C5 have utterly buried it (probably for good reason. It was commissioned under Richard Woolf).

Remarkable that this was a show being hyped two years ago as a return of Name That Tune and that Ant + Dec "could" host it (Gallowgate made it. There was some copyright issue over the Name That Tune format)

Is there any requirement from Ofcom for Channel 5 to have bulletins at 5pm and 7pm? Anyone know what the requirements are regarding news and primetime and Channel 5?

Something tells me the results show will mirror the BGT results show in its layout, get it down a few numbers, have a song and the final outcome, £1m or nothing.”

dear god, I know you guys dont think much when I slagg off ITV, but this is going to be a very expensive flop.

Given that they are allow to cut the news to 5 minutes when they have cricket, I think that scrapping the 7pm News and also OKTV would be beneficial. They air Milkshake for 3 hours so either increase Milkshake on the weekends or have News Updates from 6pm onwards.

I think JLC's contract ends this year, he was a missed opportunity as I think he works better in his documentary than he did on his chatshow and gameshow.

It won't flop, I'm sure of that, but it's clearly going to be copiously padded. Methinks they've realised the concept is a bit thin for the vast quantities of airtime desperately allotted to it.

Then again, so is TXF and look how bloated that karaoke contest has become, and eating up more airtime each and every year like an overweight chav in a Krispy Kreme...

100 hrs per year in peak - of high quality!
Quote:
“News
Not less than 408 hours in each calendar year of the Licensing Period of news programmes shall be included in the Channel 5 service between 6 am and midnight and 100 hours in each calendar year in peak viewing time. Such news programmes shall be of high quality and deal with both national and international matters. News programmes shall be provided at intervals during the day – at least one programme at lunchtimes, one in the early evening, one in the mid-evening and headlines at other times each day except on Sunday when no mid-evening programme is required.”

Not sure how they fill this?

Given that Ofcom allowed ITV1 to drop children's programmes in the afternoons, surely they could allow Channel 5 to drop the 7pm News in exchange of extending Milkshake or more current affairs and increasing the news updates.

Wonder if The Wright Stuff and Wright Stuff Extra count as current affair,

Yes would expect so.

Rather ironic for a newspaper publisher to want to drop news. I seem to recall him promising to launch a Panorama style programme when the takeover was getting approval

Given how badly Panorama rates, lauching a similar show would be a bad idea.

for what its worth, its easy to understand why Channel 5 would want to drop one of its news beraks, they do VERY little for the channel.

the problem is that as OKTV! proves, early evening is a bit of a black hole for Channel 5, once you get passed the assuie soaps.

A repeat of Cowboy Builders, first shown just a few days ago, did 500k on Monday. It shows that they could quite easily increase their share between 6:30 and 8:00 if this ridiculous news requirement didn't exist.

Worth noting as well that the 5pm news bulletin rates well. It is not the case that people WON'T watch 5 News, they just won't watch a bulletin identical to one they watched a couple of hours before. (albeit with a different presenter)

It's very hard to attract a big audience against the soaps and The One Show, only BBC Two cracks over 1m for 7-8pm. The 7.30pm do attract a good audience as does the cricket but they need to fill 6.30-7.30pm that can hold onto the Home and Away audience because they seem to dissapear for an hour then reappear an hour or an hour and a half later.

if they pass that off as current affairs or news, then ofcom may as well turn the lights off

I'd be very wary of believing much of what the Ch 5 management say tbh. A lot was said to get hold of the company, but not much has materialised.

It's amazing what broadcasters can get away with George. It's like those "regional" news bulletins on ITV. I'd be lucky to find 2 stories relevant to my area in the entire 30 minute bulletin these days. Perhaps we should be wary of ITV management too.
