Over in the US Sarah Michelle Gellar's return to television hasn't gotten off to the strongest of starts. Ringer debuted on The CW with a 1.2 in the 18-49 demo. That matches the debut of the now cancelled Hellcats last year. However worth mentioning that its lead-in, 90210 only managed a .8 down on last years opener.

Parenthood also returned last night and it to was down 15% vs. last year to a 2.3. Not the greatest of starts for the new season at NBC but maybe the new comedies will debut better out of America's Got Talent (which is up vs. last year so far) tonight.

Ouch, Alex! Not exactly a "ringing" endorsement for that one then.

Final schedules are out for w/c 24th September. From the Channel 5 side of things, Big Brother now starts at 9:15pm after The X Factor on the Saturday. The Wright Stuff Extra is being rebranded Live with Gabby Logan. The Gadget Show is back on Mondays as revealed yesterday, with Ultimate Police Interceptors moving to Fridays.

I seem to be stalking you today but I swear its not intentional . I'm glad they've finally renamed TWSE to Live with Gabby Logan. It was probably always their intention but wanted to launch a new daytime show off the back of another. As long as they still stay connected but still separate shows (e.g. Daybreak and Lorraine) then it will be fine.

That's not terrible for The CW. If it can hold relatively steady going forward it should be ok. The fact that its airing out of the sinking ship that is 90210 can only help it - its ratings should look great in comparison as the season progresses especially with 90210 set to be crushed by Glee in the 8PM slot. Having said that Ringer certainly hasn't hit the highs some people were expecting and isn't even up there with the big CW hitters and it was expected to do that.

Also Parenthood dropped like a stone in the half hour break (2.6 and 2.0). I wouldn't be hugely surprised to see it dropped further in the finals when the America's Got Talent run over is stripped out. Unfortunately I fear its days may be number. Unless NBC has another truly awful season but even then I can't see how NBC justify keeping it in that Tuesday 10PM slot with a Biggest Loser lead-in all season.

Yes, I'm not sure two episodes in 3 days (Friday 23rd and Monday 26th) is going to help matters too much.

But overall it should do a bit better there. It has been there for 99% of its life after all. And it celebrates hitting 200 episodes next month.

yes I agree, moving it always did seem odd, and pretty much put the ratings in free fall, might as well do the decent thing and move it back.

I suppose if they show too much, they then have to go to the trouble of creating another edit of the show for the daytime repeat. Then again, Channel 4 get away with all sorts of nudity before the watershed by (un)dressing it up as educational.

To be honest Salv, put two people on the screen in the Big Brother name, doing nothing but watching grass grow, and you'd still find a way to defend it and say it's brilliant!

They are certainly getting their money's worth. Seriously though, this show should dramatically improve the channel's fortunes.

The final play of The Last One on E4 drew around 400k on E4 and 187k on +1 on Sunday 4th September, excluding the later repeat. Generally Comedy Central's most popular programmes rate in the 100-200k range.

NBC wins the first night of the season with a 2.3, I can't see it getting much better for them this season - The Office will probably fall, 30 Rock is gone until mid-season and the one comedy that managed to improve its ratings last year (Parks and Rec) has been put in the 'sacrificial' slot against TXF, I think they'll be safely in P4 again this season.

That said a 2.3 isn't *too* bad by their current standards, however, the season gets properly underway next week - so it'll probably bomb.

Ouch for 71 Degrees North, but not expected as ratings were fairly low last year and surely the celeb reality format on ITV1, barring I'm A Celeb, is a busted flush now and a lot of the formats have been axed. Sad thing is they have another seven weeks of this pricey flop to endure.
A bit worrying for BB, but maybe next year when the two formats are seperated again the civilian BB will be back up to 2 million.

I’m not convinced we’ll see an unusually high drop for The Office this season. I think they did a fairly decent job last season of emphasising the strength of the ensemble and the casting has been pretty spectacular. The loss of 30 Rock isn’t an issue. As good as it might be it’s never been a big hitter for them.

Personally I’m cautiously optimistic about NBC this season. They’ve got a strong mix of shows and more than a few of them are very good. It’ll be interesting to see how things pan out for then. Their midseason is particularly strong.


They won't be. Football and the Superbowl should be enough to secure them at least third place for the season. That'll be locked in even further assuming The Voice doesn't collapse. Fourth place more than likely belongs to ABC this season.

Also worthy of note is that Fox and CBS have taken some risks this season that could make things very interesting as well.

BBC Two's baking show seems to have affected Holby City, and maybe the Champions League played its part too, but I don't think Holby routinely falls under 5m on Champions League nights.

The Body Farm didn't start as well as I'd expected, but the BBC would be happy if stayed at those levels all series. I don't think it will, though, judging by the comments I've read. Maybe if Degrees North (I've forgotten the number again!) stays in the schedule, Body Farm might at least avoid falling into embarrassment territory, even if it doesn't rate at recommission levels. That said, CSI is a ready-made alternative for any disappointed viewers.

Even if you add first-looks, +1s and repeats, Shameless seems underwhelming. I think Big Brother needs something big to get some extra people talking and watching. Might even be worth manufacturing something to stoke the ratings. It worked with the Nick thing eleven years ago.

Holby City is one of the BBC's hardy perennials like Casualty and Eastenders, delivering dependable ratings for most of the year. 5 to 6 million viewers is good whatever way you look at it.
