using a UK television in Europe
vla
05-09-2004
Hi everyone. I'm moving to the Netherlands at the end of the month and I was wondering if anyone knows if my telly should come with me or if I should flog it here before I go. I've already got one in NL anyway but I was wondering if a non-digital UK set will work in the Netherlands, not using digital cable, just the regular cable like 99% of the population has.

Thanks to all in advance.

The UK analogue TV system uses PAL I(now PAL I1) transmitting on UHF frequencies. The Netherlands uses PAL B,G and their analogue cable channels will be on VHF frequencies.
Assuming that set-top boxes are not required for analogue cable tv there, then your UK TV will need to be able to receive UHF/VHF PAL B,G transmissions.Quite a lot of modern TV sets are able to do this.Consult the TV instruction manual for details or check any on-screen menus the TV may have.

Yeah, I've got a 14" portable by Ferguson (Thomson really) and in the menus, it allows me to select which country I'm in and (presumably) changes the tuner to match. It can also pickup analogue cable channels (if we had any round here!).

I'll take it with me and see how things go. Thanks for your input.

Ah never presume anything!

Some Thomson/Ferguson TV's do indeed have a multiband tuner which allows all European systems to be viewed, many however allow you to choose a country BUT it only changes the on screen language!

To save costs, the UK versions often have the software (on screen displays) to allow changes to other countries, but they often don't fit a few extra components to actually allow the feature to work.... or some Thomsons have to be set in their service mode to allow full European operation...

It is a case of try it and see.... however TV's are so cheap now, it's often cheaper and easier to buy one over there!

I took a UK TV set out to South Africa in the late 90's, when I lived there for a while.

It was a standard, UHF only set. However I was luckily to live on the side of Cape Town where the nearest transmitter broadcast only on UHF - the same stations in the other part of the city only broadcast from a VHF transmitter.

Therefore, as the Netherlands use VHFas well as UHF, you may find you don't get the full range of channels available.
