I suppose we should count ourselves lucky that not a series of "Farage" mentions, the Luvvies think it is hilarious to just say the name.
The Brockmans are exactly the sort of public sector urbanites who will've been horrified at both Brexit and Trump. The references are totally in character as was their agonising over the perceived non-pc name calling of Dave Spazz.

I think most people were horrified at Trump, and many many people shocked by Brexit. It certainly wasn't confined to 'public sector urbanites'.

I've seen a lot of debate over whether or not Ben was allowed to drive with Mum in a cast and Dad over the limit. Was it shown in the program that Ben was a learner driver? I just assumed he was a new driver who had recently passed his test.

seejay63 he is the founder of Sports Direct who got into trouble for the way he ran the business and was up before committees etc in parliament this year. Why he was mentioned in this is beyond me. Trump and Brexit will go down in history, but I'm not sure he will. I like Christmas specials to have a timelessness about them.
I like the timelessness thing too but I think writers Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin have always sought to have 'topical' references in their comedies. They most famously did it in Drop the Dead Donkey (with news references from that very week) but I'm sure they've done it a fair bit throughout Outnumbered's run too - certainly the 2012 special made reference to the Olympics etc that year.
