I've just been catching up (belatedly) with this week's Diary. She really does need to listen to a few actual conversations between real people, doesn't she? That way, she might learn how to write believable, realistic dialogue!
One reason why the dialogue with the RS is painfully unconvincing: The way he joins with her in endlessly analysing her personality/past relationships, even offering insights about her ex-husband's personality and behaviour! Liz, real boyfriends just don't do this! Real conversations are a two-way street, with both parties engaging in reciprocal interest in each other. In Liz world, it's all about her: both parties focusing 100% on one person in the partnership.
These conversations all seem to follow the same pattern:
(1) Liz says something about herself, her personality and past experience.
(2) RS replies with in-depth analysis, offering insight that suggest many hours spent mulling over everything she's ever done or said, and generally reflecting her own view of herself back to her like a magic mirror.
(3) Liz refers to her ex-husband
(4) RS cheerfully launches into in-depth analysis of her ex-husband, usually incorporating some compliment to her in the process ("He didn't deserve you, you were too good for him" etc.) and dwelling on silly little details about the ex that no real boyfriend would waste a second thinking about and discussing. Liz would have us believe that the RS is as obsessed with the ex husband as she is!
This pattern is repeated ad infinitum, as the RS acts as a sort of flattering mirror for all Liz's self-obsessed thoughts and self-analysis. Like I said, real boyfriends simply wouldn't do this!
I guess that's the biggest reason why so many people believe Liz's conversations with other people are invented. In Liz world, everyone is 100% focused on her, to the exclusion of everything else. Taxi drivers and passengers are so tuned in to her every thought, they chip in with spontaneous comments that slot seamlessly into her own innermost thoughts. People in heartbreakingand tragic situations manage to summon up the strength to write and tell her how wonderful she is.....because really, why would they be thinking about anything else? Why would anyone ever waste time thinking about anything other than Liz?
....And what's going on with the Australia trip? First she was going there for the shag-palace married-man liaison. Then she was going to see the RS's tour. Then she gave the impression a visit to her seriously ill nephew was the reason for the trip, which she suddenly couldn't afford to make. Now she's talking about the RS's tour again and dropping hints about a £5,000 flight to Sydney?
