I think it may be just me but I have a habbit of always when I get a new album of playing it the very first time simply as background music and the second time I seem to enjoy it as I recall bits of it from the first time. I often think that my latest album is perhaps not bad at first but later I almost always start playing it over and over. I have put albums away and not played them again for months after the first play only to play it to death later. Just me then, I'll get me coat.

I see what you get at. For me if they have released sonvs prior to the album i will recognise they will stand out instantly and of course thr rest is more background.

And then the more i spin the more i recall and i get my faves.

The past year it has changed as leaks are on You Tube for the albums and that helps me to identify the sound of the album etc. I know i shouldnt but i did

If it's an album I've been looking forward to for a long time I tend to listen to it in sections. So for example I'll only listen to Songs 1-3 first then when I've listened to them 2 or 3 times I'll move onto the next songs and add a few more in!

Also must add, for an artist like Madonna or Britney, or Kylie or Beyonce etc.etc. where I have all or some albums and they have a new one i buy i always listen to it and think HOW it can match up to previous albums and how much i like it.

Femme Fatale is a recent example where in its initial weeks i was like...this is her best and then when i played Blackout and In The ZOne it makes it all come into perspective deinitely So yeah. I have my ways

Unfortunately, I've sort of ruined the wonderful first listen experience. The only way for me to get the cd's that I want is to order them from Amazon.com (European Amazon companies don't work for me). That means that if I want the products to be delivered in less than 5 weeks () then I have to pay taxes that most of the times are more than 35-40% of the overall price ().Therefore, I cannot joke around and just go order an album out of the blue ()I have to listen to the album in its entirety on YouTube at least twice to be totally sure that I want this album and sometimes when it's delivered I've moved on from it ().

However, I do understand the "recalling the moment" thing you've noticed.I always connect music to what's going on around me, so even the weather can be a good memory from the first listening experience!IMy method is to watch all the videos and listen to all the singles off of the album. If I like them then I start listening to the whole album on YouTube (at least 2 mins of each song) and if I like it enough then the next day I listen to it once more to cement my opinion.Sometimes when I'm unsure it helps to read some reviews. You'd be surprised by how many interesting prospectives and "pointers" you're going to get by reading a (professional or not) review. It makes you really understand the album and form an overall point of view about the record (if you can stop yourself from becoming a sheep of course )

When I play a CD for the first time for one of my more favourite artists e.g. Beyoncé, Rihanna, Christina Aguilera I always try to make time for them so take an hour out and just chill and listen to the songs and connect with it. Then the second and third plays I always compare the record to previous works and see how it matches up, if its better, equal or worse than the older albums.

When I first listen to an album I don't want any distraction so I make sure nothing/no one will bother me when I listen to it. Most albums I get are usually from singer I love so I have to take the time out and listen to them properly.

It's funny, when ever I get a new album I always think how am I gonna learn all the words for the songs like I have with their last album, I guess the more you listen the more you pick u[ the words with out really realising or something lol.

I listen to each song several times. Realistically, your not gonna love an album straight away. I literally listen to the heck of an album until my brain decideds it likes it.

Just an add-on: does anyone miss the old records that when you got home and took out the disk from it's sleeve and got that smell that was only there with new records? You don't get that with cds and I miss it.

Good topic spiderpig
To me it is an almost religious experience lol. There must be no distractions whatsoever, and it must be the physical form, and then I like to look at the artwork and read all the little messages and song titles in the booklet, then I actually put the album on for its first listen. I listen to the album all the way through, sometimes I get a sort of good feeling about some of the tracks straight away, very, very occasionally I love every single track, but most times I need to play it over and over several times. I love discovering new things on each listen. Everyone has their own favourites, but I still listen to Adele's 21 most days and Leona's Echo, I just never seem to get tired of them.
Spiderpig, I know what you mean about vinyl's lol. I still have a lot of old vinyl's and my old Bang and Olufsen turntable and often have a pleasure evening listening to them. I wish some of my favourite artists had vinyls.

this is what I do, most of the time. Usually rip and sync the album straight to mp3 and go out for a walk with the album playing. It does feel like your never going to remember all the words to the songs, but you always pick up them up quite quick.

I analyse an album when i first hear it. Vocals and production. I will also try and point out similarities to previous music. Some say i analyse music too much but i guess after my time at a music academy, i use my full advantage of that.

Oh my GOD!!!You are so clever!!Why haven't I thought of that??? If you read my post you'd understand that this is the only way for me to get the cd's I want (I believe this is exactly what I stated).I've been shopping in music shops for my whole life and I mostly shopped at small shops that I had to order something to get it.But I didn't mind because I loved searching the shelves; I loved the whole atmosphere of a music shop. Now all the small music shops have shut down because of the recession and there are only 2-3 big stores in my city that never have the cd's I want. They don't even sell them in jewelcases; they sell them in some weird carbon-ish cases to make them cheaper and they don't even include the booklets to make them even chepaer. This is not what I want to buy, so I have to order from Amazon.com.You could have just asked me, I guess.

Don't feel the need to explain yourself

If that is how you do stuff, that's your business, not anyone else.

You're right, but I thought I was as precise as I needed to be with my first post when I said that ordering from abroad is the ONLY way for me to get the cd's.Since someone didn't understand, I thought I should give it another try.
