Slightly green potatoes - okay to eat?
We have a bag of potatoes which went out of date on the 31st August, and they're developing a very slight green tinge. Would they still be okay to bake and eat tonight or do they need throwing away?
Thanks! |

I wouldn't eat them, the green indicates an increase in solanine which could give you an upset stomach. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solanine

I doubt that they are green the whole way through. If I have a potato that has a slightly green haze, I will cut it off. I would not recommend it to you, because I don't want you to get food poisoning. |

Apparently you're not supposed to but I've always done so (cooked all the way through) and have never suffered any adverse effects...

You'll find that when they are peeled the green doesn't usually penetrate far, so as long as they are unformly white they will be absolutely fine.
