Caller display
I have just got this on my line and thought that it would display any number that I had stored in my phone, regardless of whether the caller is ex directory. Is this not right? Two friends so far are coming up as withheld number even though they are stored on the phone.

They will come up as withheld unless they choose to override it themselves even though they are in your phonebook.
I think they can override it by by dialling 1470 before your number. |

Caller display displays the number sent in a data burst as the call is established. If the caller chooses to withhold that number then nothing is sent in the appropriate part of the data burst. So therefore with no number being sent your phone has nothing to compare against it's phonebook so cannot display the callers name.
The caller can withhold the number one call at a time by dialling 141 before the number or they can have their service provider withhold it for all calls automatically. In the latter case, as mentioned above, they can dial 1470 before the number to unblock it. |

For example at home my number is ex-directory but I have not asked my telco to withhold the number. Therefore people can see my number on their Caller ID. |

Caller ID has nothing to do with whether a subscriber is ex-directory or not. Your two friends have withheld their number which is not the same thing at all.

We have two ex-directory landlines in our house. Because we don't specifically withhold our numbers, the numbers appear on caller ID. |

But as beerhunter2 posted being ex-directory or not is totally unrelated to caller ID. So if Miss C. DeVille was saying being ex-directory automatically meant no caller ID then that would be incorrect. Withholding caller ID is a separate service. As posted above, you can be ex-directory but still send caller ID. Equally you can have your name and number listed in dayglow letters six inches tall in the phone book but still withhold your caller ID. |
