I've noticed that most boybands that are only really there for their looks and charms peak at their beginning very well but then as the grow older and so do their fans they start flopping or break up.

Does anyone think this will happen with 1 Direction and The Wanted? I know some bands "re-invent" themselves but still neither Boyzone nor McFly have had a No.1 Single in years.

I guess that some of the band are like 16 so they have a long time but I just don't think that they'll gain fans in 5 years, it's only the original fans that stick with boy bands if you've realized. They all become uncool after 5 years and some new band come over. Once their fans have matured they will move on from their music.

Harry will be living as a woman by then, with a fully operational vagina.

I always feel sorry for boybands because the main requirement of the members is to be young and cute. One Direction will only be in their late twenties in 10 years, but they will be seen as washed up and ancient.

They won't last, they don't have anything that The Wanted or JLS don't have and they won't beat Take That, in 10 years time they'll be old news

Boybands never last beyond about 4/5 albums
Unless your backstreets boys who record an album every few years and still barely anyone buys it

Take that are a rare example to split up, come back and reinvent themselves.

Male groups don't tend to last that long, but you can't rule them out, because there are some that manage to last 10+ years.

This is mainly about pop groups though. Some male hip hop and dance/electronica groups often have careers longer than 10 years, but their music often appeals to older people, and they're usually less reliant on their appearance.

I agree with the OP. While McFly aren't necessarily a boyband - they play their own instruments and write their own music, and one of the members is the drummer and not a singer, so they're a de facto "proper band" to be fair - they are definitely on a downward slide due to lack of consistent appeal and aging.

JLS are definitely starting to run out of time - they've played all their joker cards already and within say, two years, I really think they'll be old news. And The Wanted have so little going for them apart from looks that I can't see them lasting for more than a few years either.

And One Direction have even less going for them, as shockingly for a boy band, they cannot even harmonise when they're singing live - they all sing the same thing. They are a truly amateur group.

I think what will hurt them even further is that they were from The X Factor.
7 years later, who even thinks about Steve Brookstein? 6 Years Later, Shayne Ward? He keeps trying, but people aren't really that interested anymore. Or even more recently, Leon Jackson?
Leona is the one who I think is really making the biggest impact from the show and has been really successful, followed by Alexandra Burke, though the true test is when she releases her next album.

Sadly, I can't see One Direction becoming the next Take That. They are very current, they are very RIGHT NOW, so they should do all they can to make their millions in the years when it's easiest for them.

I can see Harry or Zayn having a solo career in their mid-twenties though. Harry because he is the best singer and girls seem to love him, and Zayn because he has a very marketable look about him. And we all know that looks these days CAN sell records, look at Katy Perry etc. I can see Zayn maturing into a handsome man and appealing to a whole new fanbase and releasing R&B music. I don't any of them will be huge though after the group split. They might last a few years solo by by their 30's they'll be gone.

Harry will still be THE SEX

But the band as a whole will be down the shitter for sure. Their song is total crap (imo of course) but it will sell 150k+ in a week for sure You can't escape it! However, I'm sure they'll be in decline by the 3rd/4th single.

I don't think they'll still be a band but I can see some of them going off into presenting or something and still being in the limelight. I can see Harry or Zayn being presenters.

I imagine they will last longer than JLS though.

Like McFly though, JLS have recently started writing lyrics now too. So that should lengthen their career a bit, using that logic, surely?

RnB music won't be popular in 10 years time, unfortunately. The only genre that looks to be popular in the future is pop music, but I agree with you in general. I think maybe some of them could do solo careers.

Well I didn't know that actually. Oh no, I don't think writing your own lyrics means a long career. I just think McFly don't quite qualify as a boy band, and the OP mentioned them in that way. It might help keep them fresh though, I suppose. So it could help.

I think they'll split up, 1/2 try solo careers that flop, one does alright and another is a one hit wonder, one will probably do eurovision

It's based on what some boy bands do ^^
Bands like Oasis, Blur, The Killers and The Foo Fighters that aren't really known for sex appeal do a lot better but I'm not so sure how they are doing better, I guess that they have more of an audience as a 40 year old man wouldnt really buy a JLS or Blue record as they are only seen as kids idols

They'll just be seen as a generic "manband" like Westlife I guess. IMO they are generic now tho. I don't think boybands really last that long. Look at Westlife - they seem to be past their sell-by date already. Same with Take That.

Probably reform for a Here & Now-style tour (they would have split up years previously)

Some of them are bound to have posed for a Naked issue of Attitude (but only once the hits have dried up) as well as appear in I'm a celebrity, Dancing on Ice, or Strictly

I personally think that they will last about 10 years and then Harry and Liam will both try solo careers while Zayn goes into modelling, Louis maybe a TV presenter(he would be AWESOME as one!), and Niall will disappear I'd buy anything Liam released

I really doubt any of them will ever go into a reality show though.

That's hillarious!

For a a boyband that can't sing together and are X factor failures (twice over). Come on...10 years?? seriously? so you think all the 12 year old girls now, will still be buying their records when they are in they are in their 20's..I really don't think so.

I'm thinking 8-10 year olds! This is the problem with boy bands. The girls just grow up. Take That just managed to meet up with them again with a "sound" that appealed to thirty somethings. I don't get 1D - they can't harmonise or dance - aren't those the prerequisite skills for this boy band success. They feel like the Emperor's new clothes to me.

I know, and I'm just giving mine..(re-reading my post may have sounded a bit condascending, apologies) but I really think we'll be saying in a couple of years One who?? I'm probably saying this out of hope rather than expectation

It's the fact that they are a bunch of very ordinary boys, with no real talent, that will be told what to sing, how to dress, how to mime etc etc..a front for a big marketing experiment. more fool those who get taken in by that I suppose.

Apology accepted Yeh I understand that but I actually know Zayn personally and if you knew him, you would know that those boys would never do anything they didn't like. Zayn said that he would refuse to sing or wear anything that him or any of the boys didn't like. I know this doesn't actually have anything to do with how long they will be around for, but I still think they are doing the right thing by this. And they actually are very talented!

Why have we not seen any indication of this then? or are they fooling us all, and we are about to see them change pop music forever with their amazing songwriting and musicianship?
