I've always thought that, if you pay for a seat on public transport of any kind, then a seat you should get. If you end up standing for the length of your journey I always feel you should at least get half your money back. I had to stand for 3 hours heavily pregnant once on a train, nobody was giving up their seat for me... not that they should, but it was a difficult journey and an expensive trip. I always booked a seat after that, of course you can't do that on buses.
