I started a thread recently asking opinions about palatable meat substitutes.

Well ... I went and bought some Quorn peppered steaks at the weekend and they were FABULOUS
They aren't the same as a steak or a burger but I found them really really delish. I also got some Red Leicester and onion sausages but I haven't tried them yet.

If you are concerned about animal fat intake BE NOT AFRAID ... Quorn is very palatable

I am not as concerned about animal fat as I am about hydrogenated vegetable fat.

I'm of the same opinion as LaChatteGitane.

But I do eat a varied diet and those Red Leicester and Onion sausages sound nice.

I had an absolutely delicious rare venison filet at the weekend. That's real food, and not much fat on it either.

Some people don't eat meat for moral reasons, i know the OP may not be one of them, nothing to do with 'real food'. I don't like veggies who make people feel bad for eating meat, but equally, i think it's most unfair and unnecessary to suggest that veggie food isn't 'real' in some way.

Oh dear .. they DO contain hydrogenated fat and palm oil

What's WORSE is that Quorn allegedly said they would "look at" removing hydrogenated fats from their products in 2006, so they ARE aware of the health risks. I mistakenly assumed they'd done so and didn't bother to check

*rushes off to rethink whole eating plan*

If you only eat it now and again it does no harm, but if you want lean, then chicken and turkey are very good. Fillet steak is also pretty lean, but not easy on the pocket

Indeed. I'm sure I eat my fair share of hydrogenated vegetable fat, but I think the OP hasn't informed herself properly on the subject of good and bad fats.

Funnily enough I am aware that there are good and bad fats and I am also aware that the less hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats we eat the better .. and palm oil is an absolute no-no.

I will admit though, that I assumed that a low fat product would not contain these and I was wrong.

And again you focus too much on 'fat and clogging up your arteries'
I wouldn't say palm oil is an absolute no-no for that reason. Palm oil is an absolute no-no just because it is grown in places that have been cleared of rainforest and are a threat to natural habitat.

You avoid palm oil for your own reasons and I'll avoid it for mine.

And as for your assuming I ''focus too much on clogging up my arteries'' ....
I hardly think I've posted enough on digital spy for anyone to reach any proper conclusions about me or my lifestyle

Don't get your knickers in a twist

Three of the threads you started here in F&D seem to suggest otherwise.
I know now that I'm not supposed to question, so I will leave you to it.

I made toad in the hole with quorn cumberland sausages this week and they were still tasty! I must admit though, it didn't compare with the real thing.

Just like soya, but no-one complains about that.

If you are watching your health or weight, unless you are vegetarian I don't think there are any real substitutes for the "white" meats like turkey, chicken, pork etc. Lean red meat is fine once in a while too. I find it really sad that these days the focus is on what is in things rather than what tastes good. Same with the salt nazi's. It's been said a million times but "everything in moderation" really does hold true!
