Yay! After Channel 5 snatched B&B and Days away from us to show that godawful Home and Away (no offence to its fans, it was my favorite soap before i found out the americans did it much better) i was so upset, us Brit soap fans were missing out on some quality american drama!
Sunset Beach was my first view of the delights of the American soap and i faithfully and avidly followed it for its entire run on five. It was so nice to be part of a cult audience, it really was OUR SHOW and we loved it!
Anyway, after the Beach was cancelled I researched every damned American soap online and fell in love with them! I have no life!! The kind of campy NBC soaps Days and Passions!
The CBS ones, I loved the traditional and sophisticated Bill Bell soaps which are The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the beautiful, the history of the Proctor and Gamble sponsored soaps Guiding Light and As the World Turns and the excitement and energy of the ABC soaps, All My Children, One Life to Live and.... General Hospital!!!
I have to say I got into following the ABC ones the most, they are utterly brilliant! I love GH's characters, the amazing Luke Spencer, the fcking neurotic Carly, psychos Faith and Helena, the insecure Skye, the ludicrous Quartermaines, even mob boss Sonny. And I was insantly endeared to classic characters like the ditzy Lucy, the beautiful Brenda Barrett and the fantastic British superspy, Anna Devane!!
And stories like Stone dying of AIDS, BJ dying and having her heart given to her cousin Maxie, amazing stories.
The acting actually is very good.
I've discovered this documentary celebrating GH's 35 anniversary, its from 1998.

INTRO, from Tony Geary (Luke):

THE 1960's (featuring Steve & Audrey's love story):

THE 70's (Monica/Rick/Alan, Scotty/Bobbie/Laura, Luke)

THE 80's (Luke/Laura, Anna/Duke, Frisco/Felicia)

THE 90s Pt 1 (Lucy & the Nurses Ball, Stone/Robin and AIDS, BJ/Maxie/Heart Transplant)

THE 90s Pt 2 (Ned & Lois, Quartermaine madness, Carly/Bobbie/Tony, Sonny & Brenda, the Spencers vs the Cassadines)

ABC1 start on September 27th on Freeview initially, but they hope to expand to other platforms in the future.

General Hospital will be shown each morning at 9.30 am and there will be an omnibus on Sunday mornings. I suspect that if the ratings are good, then ABC may consider playing the other soaps from ABC US (All my children and One Life to Live).

If you don't have Freeview I suggest you get your set-top box now, but remember to check on http://www.Freeview.co.uk with your postcode to see if you can receive Freeview.

If you are outwith coverage area, I may be recording episodes and uploading them to the internet, each one will be around 400MB so you need a Broadband connection to download them - but this is only if I can get the web space sorted out.

Wouldn't it be easier to share them with Bittorrent or something rather than put on webspace? The bandwidth would be horrendous

I was hoping someone would be doing something similar with SB but it looks like I'll have to stick to taping them.

If you can describe how to share them with BitTorrent I can do both shows...

I already have episodes 1&2 of SB.

Download the clip above that is of the 1990's, it really was amazing, I doubt very much the acting is as good as it was then, all US soaps seem to have gone the same way.

in mpeg1/2 or 4 ? When I encode 22 minutes of S&D in Xvid at 592x448, I end up with 160MB files.
At 400MB per episode, I'm not sure you'll be able to find that much webspace, if you keep each episode available for a week you would need 2 GB of webspace !
If you have a DSL connection it will take you over 4 to 8 hours to upload 1 episode depending on your upload speed.
You could make them available via ftp but people would not be able to download faster than you can upload and imagine if 10 people download at the same time.
Like Uncle Dave said, depending on the number of people who would be interesting you might be better off making them available via Bittorrent or Shareaza.

Well that was what I meant, I didnt actually mean i was going to share via a webpage, I am aware of the upload times, but I am very new to the sharing of large files, I use bit torrent all the time to download big files, but I am trying to find out how i can upload.

I dont know what mpeg it is, all i know is it plays in windows media plaer...

well the picture quality is terrible and I would need an actual episode to form an opinion.
I was only referring to the storylines the original poster mentioned

Nice one. I'm probably not the best person to tell you about BT because I only download stuff from it, but I use Bit Comet and that seems to have a torrent maker that looks quite simple.

No idea what tracker you could upload to though

I don't know how to start a torrent, it seems a bit complex, but I only had a quick look.
You could try making them available via Shareaza first and see how it goes. http://www.shareaza.com/
I've already go it installed it's pretty straightforward.

How can you not know what format it is ? If you are going to record them yourself. First, what extension do the videos have ? mpg/avi/wmv... Then you can find more info when you play the clip, right click on the player and look what filters are being used.

looks like you need the maketorrent application :
http://dessent.net/btfaq/#utils

and a site's tracker like suprnova.org.

And then that's how you use them :

Obviously that was recorded on VHS first.

I think those 3 stories would have been well spaced out in Ten years so I doubt you could make an assumption that the show is depressing.

I will read up on the maketorrent stuff, I am less willing to try shareaza because I don't want anymore software installed on my computer. Already have bit-torrent and the website suprnova.org allows you to upload torrents, i might try there.

That'll be great, let us know what you decide to do. I'm sure there will be a demand for both shows

if the VHS recording isn't too bad, you should be able to get much better results. I think the main reason why it looks that way is because the resolution is so low at 320x240 (lower than VCD in fact) and the video bitrate is only 196kbps.

I was suggesting Shareaza because it's simple, free and contains no spyware and no third party products. But if you prefer bittorrent it's cool too, and that forces people to share as long as they're downloading at least.

I think I might have done it right, but I'm really not sure, I have tested a small file it is the opening to Sunset Beach and is only around 5MB...

http://www.torrentbox.com/index.php

thats the URL and it is right at the top, you might need to register to download I do not know... can someone try it to see if it works?

It seems to be working now, I'm downloading at 80kbs only though.
I'm using shareaza to download.
If you don't have Windows XP (which has a built-in firewall), then you most probably haven't got one otherwise you would remember installing it.
