So pleased for PJ... although I've got some great new artists to listen to after this mainly Anna, Everything Everything and James Blake.

James's album is pretty damn special... the only people who I wouldn't have been keen on winning would have been TT or Katy B, mainly due to me not liking their work.

I haven't seen much of katy b but what I did see didn't seem particularly outstanding... TT is ok, but his work isn't quite as revolutionary or probably important as previous winners such as dizzee rascal imo. he is doing good pop music, just not mercury award winning pop music.

Really didn't think PJ Harvey would win considering she's already won it before. Glad she did though, a well deserved win for a great album.

The city of New York is now running around in a panic about history repeating itself.

Brilliant result totally deserved.
Though I'd have been happy with Metronomy, King Creosote, or Anna Calvi winning.

Decent result, not a particular fan of PJ Harvey but I can't really argue with that.

The Mercury Prize is a better representation of best album than the Brits.
The Brits award success rather than quality whereas most of the time the Mercury Prize does go to the best album.
This year it has cause PJ Harvey's had one hand on this award since the album was released back in February cause its just that good.
In an ideal world she would clean up at next years Brits but they'll probably give it to Adele. Not cause its a better album but because they reward success which is no way to judge awards that are supposed to be Best album etc.

PJ Harvey is a worthy winner and has come a long way from being an angry young post punk/blues artist pumping out crash chords on guitar. Always evolving and always changing with each album. She deserved to win, although Anna Calvi undoubtedly will become a big name in future years and will probably win the Mercury Prize at some time..

For those unfamiliar with PJ this is what she used to sound and look like 10 years ago when she last won the MMP

Music snob is often a word that springs up when people don't get it.

I am hoping that people will now get the chance to hear things like the King Creosote album, which only reached 86 in the charts.

He's playing just up the road from me next month and it's only a tenner a ticket. I've managed to coerce 5 people to come with me so far. I kind of know how Jesus felt now.

I was listening to Frank Turner tonight on the preview show on Radio 1 tonight, he said he hadn't heard the K C album before today, and he thought it was the best of them all, and will buy it tomorrow.

It picked up the KC Rules album a few months back in HMV's 2 for £10 and listened to it but not payed a great deal of attention to it. Then i bought Diamond Mine just after the nominations came out for a fiver. Brilliant. Your Young Voice is one of the loveliest things I've heard this or any other year.

I've since gone back and re listened to KC Rules and Diamond Mine is no fluke. From the look of things as well the guy seems to crap records. It looks like he has dozens of them kicking around. It could be a completists nightmare.

i watched the show at 10pm. to be fair. it was well deserved and she was gracious during her acceptance speech. now her music is not to my taste at all. however, in my opinion that is what the award should be about. raising the profile of a talented artist.

Totally agree. We already have The Brits to reward sales success (even though they pretend they don't) so i think awards like The Mercurys are essential in promoting more 'left field' stuff. I'm pleased for PJ.

Ah, one of those people who thinks anyone who likes something she doesn't must be a 'poser' or 'snob'. In this case 'music snob' means 'I don't get it so it must be wrong'. Grow up. This prize is chosen by people who comparatively listen to hundreds of albums a year and choose one based on musical innovation, clarity of meaning, performance, songwriting and emotional depth, not clamoring populist imbeciles with narrow scope and no concept of cultural history or artistry.

Every year there's a few whinging dullards who've never had the initiative or inclination to actually explore music who then whine about 'snobbery' on the very, very rare occasions an artist who hasn't been on ITV1 20 times in the last year gets a bit of recognition. To these people - music isn't just for you. Hundreds of albums are released every year that you neither have the drive to listen to or the depth to comprehend. Go piss on someone else's bonfire.
