The Anna Calvi album is really good. She's quite similar to PJ Harvey in style. I could imagine it being a Marmite album though, but personally I think it's a cracker.
She does seem a little scary though. |

I've seen Anna Calvi live a couple of times but for whatever reason was never really taken with her music. I know what people mean about her being scary, but I might have to give the album a bit of a listen anyway.
But thats the great thing about awards like the Mercury prize for me - it doesnt really matter who wins, I just see it as another way of finding out about albums that are clearly highly rated that might otherwise have passed me by. |

iv'e followed pj harvey's career for years and have to say her albums flatter to deceive in my opinion. They seem good briefly then fade away. I loved Let England Shake for about 3 weeks of playing, now i can't abide the thing.
that might say more about me, but i don't believe it does

Ah, one of those people who thinks anyone who likes something she doesn't must be a 'poser' or 'snob'. In this case 'music snob' means 'I don't get it so it must be wrong'. Grow up. This prize is chosen by people who comparatively listen to hundreds of albums a year and choose one based on musical innovation, clarity of meaning, performance, songwriting and emotional depth, not clamoring populist imbeciles with narrow scope and no concept of cultural history or artistry.
Every year there's a few whinging dullards who've never had the initiative or inclination to actually explore music who then whine about 'snobbery' on the very, very rare occasions an artist who hasn't been on ITV1 20 times in the last year gets a bit of recognition. To these people - music isn't just for you. Hundreds of albums are released every year that you neither have the drive to listen to or the depth to comprehend. Go piss on someone else's bonfire. how about im entitled to an opinion just because it does not suit yours, tough its a snobby attitudes like this that hurts music not mine, berating people for liking someone or something commerical as all youre interested in is your "cool" points I called snobbery as thats what comments like the ones you have made seem to be. |

Well done Polly Jean!
A suitable prize for an excellent, mature album. |

Didn't you start the personal comments saying people who like this are musical snobs? You even put presumably expletives as well. People in glass houses etc etc.
I think Adele would prefer it if she won as well. not aimed towards one person so no i didnt, but seeing as youre the person who made the comments about me i can see why you'd need to attempt to justify it |

I'd never heard of PJ Harvey until the brief clip of her performance they showed last night. From what I saw/heard her music seems waily and her voice was very annoying. And why do artists insist on wearing fancy dress these days? It's just ridiculous. Why can't they wear something nice and normal like Adele and Katy B were rather than trying desperately to stand out and wear ****ing ridiculous outfits that you'd be arrested for for wearing in public? Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry I'm looking at you too.

Congratulations to PJ Harvey!! Not my personal favourite, but glad she won all the same.
I had a feeling the "snobbery" argument may arise. It really is sad. It's the same as when Laura Marling won British Female at the Brits, and people on here so cleverly argued, "I've never heard of her, so she mustn't be that good". |

How would they know if she was rubbish if they've never heard of her. And she's not rubbish. She's a lovely little pixie thing. She'll probably get nominated for a Brit this year along with PJ ( I want to type '&Duncan' so much right here) Harvey but they'll unfairly lose out to Adele in a case of what could be termed Reverse Snobbery. You sold a lot of albums it doesn't matter if your albums the best heres a prize. |

The people accusing others of being music snobs are just as bad because these people are probably the ones that don't even bother to look beyond the music charts for good music. Why are you even watching the Mercury Music Awards, anyway? The judges don't vote for the most obscure artist. If that were true they would've gone for someone MORE obscure. PJ is one of the more known artists from the list. They even awarded Ms. Dynamite one year, who was a chart topper back in the day.
I like all types of music, whether it is 'obscure' or whether it has sold a lot. Why is that even relevant? Grow up. |

Adele won't win. The favourite NEVER wins.
Probably because it is a stunning album acknowledging the events of 9/11 and on the horrors of war which has had a near perfect set of stunning reviews (and a Metacritic.com aggregate rating of 85/100). Polly Jean said with the album – which she researched for several years (and first talked about in the planning stages back in 2005), talking to soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq – she had wanted to create "something of meaning, not just for myself but for other people". She added that she wanted to make something "that would last". "It makes me really happy and it makes me want to continue to go about my work as I've always done, taking great care and seriousness over it." Simon Frith, chair of the Mercury judging panel, said the album was "an example of an artist having complete conception for an album". "There is a song cycle in the traditional sense," he said. "All the songs relate to each other and there is nothing you can imagine changing." One thing is certain, it is far better than a numerical titled album lacking the charm of that artist's debut album's folky/acoustic tracks and a stunning cover of a Bob Dylan song, replaced with a more corporate sound to be lapped to by the lowest common denominator X-Factor masses & Tesco mums with a horrific massacre of a Cure song by an artist accurately described in a recent US Radio interview by PIL/ex-Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon as "like listening to the secret lovechild of Alison Moyet and Phil Collins". |

The favourite on Oddschecker at 9/2 favourite was PJ Harvey Let England Shake.

I try and rise above calling anyone a music snob but your post is tempting me. Why can't you praise your favourite and be glad that she won without spewing bile about another artist at the same time? It's most ungracious and marks you out as what I stated in my opening sentence. I get the impression from PJ fans that they actually would have preferred Adele to win so they could have had a right old moan and dig. It's really really strange. I think what the poster you replied to was trying to say was that the biggest selling album just about never wins the Mercury and that is fact. Adele fans accepted a long time ago that she wasn't going to win and I think from what I've seen on here the vast majority of those that have responded on the forums have said they are glad PJ won and good luck to her. The Mercury has a place in the awards calendar to help balance out what happens at The Brits IMO and I'm genuinely pleased for the lass. PS Seems like PJ has much more grace than some of her fans as she actually picked out Adele to praise before the show. Maybe some of her fans could adopt a similar outlook? |
