Obviously the "PR operation" at work here is say nothing about the release push back. Leona has probably been "allowed" to tweet something to keep her money paying, record buying fans sweet for another few months.
The irratating thing is that release dates, song titles, reviews keep being mentioned, mainly by Leona only for them to be taken away a few weeks, months later. How many different possible release dates/periods has Leona mentioned over the last year?
The thing that's setting the alarm bells ringing here for me is that Syco press released that the album would be out in Nov, we have an album title, we have a cover and only now are Leona/label backtracking. If there was hints that the album wouldn't be ready or that there wasn't a cut off point for completion before Collide was released, they wouldn't have a) released Collide and b)teased the album release.
Someone somewhere has pulled the plug on the album, not necessarilly in it's entirity but the only reason a label would push back at this late stage would be that the album isn't strong enough (musically, quality) or commercially viable. As critics have been praising a number of songs and even questionning why Collide was released over other songs, I would suggest the performance of Collide (with it's experimental qualities) has made the label think twice about releasing an album with experimental qualities.
My best bet is Leona will now be sent back to studio with Tedder to work on one maybe two ballads. This will then be released in February for Valentines followed by album late Feb, early March.
In terms of X factor US/UK. Leona will now have nothing to promote so expect Bleeding Love on US and maybe a duet with a contestant for UK. US performance will simply be about showing the US audience that the brand is capable of producing a hit. They will use Bleeding Love to remind everyone of that.
I have a strong suspicion that the US label have more to do with this than Syco. Collide is not particularly US friendly, yes people like Rihanna are releasing similar tracks now but she is riding on previous success, Leona is not. From what we've heart about Trouble, it is very "London", trip-hop. Again, not US friendly.
For me, this whole mess breaks down to two issues...
1.The poor handling of Leona's career once again by Syco.
2.Leona demonstrating that she doesn't understand how to commicate to her fans. If you're not happy Leona, tell us. Syco are not going to put a hit out on you if you say something bad about them.
My worst fear is that the label(s) are trying to simply recreate the success of Spirit and modest success of Echo. The charts are so much different now to when these albums were released. Bleeding Love was so successful because it was so different to anything else out there. Happy was a good song, not amazing but still good. It did the business in showing that Leona was releasing an album of quality songs in the same vein as her first album. Again, nobody else was really doing ballads at that time or at least not well. Remember, Happy was up against Black Eyed Peas on release.
Now, however, we have Adele. She's taken the ballad/british soul to a whole new level. Her album is a raw, creative collection of songs written by the artist about one subject. Leona is not that kind of artist. While her voice is amazing, at this point in her career, she is not capable of presenting a concept album. She could have mediocre success here with a ballad but in US, she would be seen as jumping on the Adele bandwagon. Album #3 should be about risks, if Leona wants longevity, she is gonna have to take some risks, one of which should be leaving Syco.
P.s. I love Leona
