I wish I looked like Nancy at nearly 60 ....oops sorry I mean 49
She's admitting to 50 now!

I just thing she is outrageous and I have never been able to work out if she means some of the things she says or just does it for effect - maybe when she's on her own she kills herself laughing about what she said that day!

A very brave thread Sid, but quite a few people in agreement with you.

I don't know much about her, and so have no real reason to like or particularly dislike her. I do however like the fact that before coming to everyone's attention she had established a career which did not entirely rely on being decorative (although having said that, she has capitalized on it to fair extent).

I also suspect she might actually turn out to be quite a good dancer.

It's quite easy to google Nancy Dell'Olio and read all about her accomplishments:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nancy_Dell'Olio
Yes, I read that.

Errr,,, can you name one accomplishment then?

She got married to a millionaire in 1990 - before that, she had a job working for a legal firm. I mean, it's not nothing, but it doesn't exactly set the world on fire... I don't get it, what has she, you know, achieved?

I also suspect she might actually turn out to be quite a good dancer.
Quite possibly.

It'd be nice if someone disucssed the dancing occasionally.

Well yes, that's why I said that she has capitalised on her appearance to some extent - so I agree she's not the greatest example of a high achieving woman, but maybe someone who has some substance.
Once the series has started maybe we can talk about the dancing (it would be nice), but I suspect from the BBC's choice of line up (some big characters) that personality is going to be a significant factor this series.

Hi VL, nice to see you again

How is the dancing going?

Yes, I read that.

- Setting up her own legal practice

- Launching her own range of lingerie

- Chairwoman of Truce International

- Patron of the Accademia Apulia UK.

There hasn't been any dancing yet, so it's natural for folk to be focusing on personalities.

Hi Sid, nice to see you too. Dancing is going well, although having a month's break from AT since my teacher has gone back to Argentina to visit family.

I love that her date of birth is given as "probably 23 August 1961". I have high hopes she's going to be like the Sinitta of SCD.

I agree - the Italians were always keen on our style of ballroom dancing. The first world champions from a non-English speaking country were Italians - Luca & Loraine Baricchi

Ha is Sinitta still claiming to be 36.

I like Nancy, i think she'll be utterly bonkers. She has zero Modesty here is what the journalist Caitlin Moran tweeted.

Del'Ollio turned up as Glastonbury in white canvas boots and got a boy to push her around backstage in a wheelbarrow

I still don't get it.

I mean, her "substance" seems to be "she had a job, working for a company, once."

Errr... and?

That she's not a complete moron whose only occupation is shopping for clothes, maybe? What's wrong with you DJ?

- Setting up her own legal practice
After marrying the (first) millionaire, and before cheating on him with the second, you mean?

- Launching her own range of lingerie
That's an accomplishment? I thought that was simply "stuff trashy celebs do, to raise their profile when they don't have any actual talent"? (see, Jordan, Vicky Beckham etc.)

- Chairwoman of Truce International
Huh, a football-based charity. There's a coincidence.

But OK, it's better than nothing.

- Patron of the Accademia Apulia UK.
A networking organisation?

I'm sorry, she's not exactly Mother Theresa.

And I'm still struggling to see what she, by herself, has accomplished, based on her own talents.

Hey, she may be a great contestant. If so, that's fantastic.

I'm just still not seeing why people think she's a creative dynamo, you know?
What's wrong with you DJ?
How long have you got?

If you like, she's like that ex-wife of Paul McCartney. So some people actually like her in DOI. We get it that you don't like her. Why must you be so relentlessly anal about it DJ?

Fair enough.

We get it that you don't like her.
Then you're wrong.

I don't have an opinion on her. I don't know much about her. I'm sure I will develop such an opinon, but at the moment I'm neutral. Who knows, I may well start to like the woman, stranger things have happened.

I'm simply trying to find out why others do have such a positive opinion on her.

Why must you be so relentlessly anal about it DJ?
It beats work.

Maybe if someone would, you know, actually answer the "what has she done?" question with something tangible...

I don't know why I like her. It's subjective. I just like her. But that might change when I get to see the 'real' her when the show starts... I can't explain it, it's a male thing, I guess.

I think it's sweet that she has so many fans. Lord knows, she'll need them.

Keep up the good work.

Hey, I was only suggesting that she wasn't a complete airhead, that's all. I wasn't yet planning to start an appreciation thread for her, or programme her voting line number into my telephone. Having an initial expectation of someone is no problem as long as it is open to revision. And knowing Sid from his previous posts, he keeps a fairly open mind and often revises his initial opinion

I do not believe that when you look at the line up for Strictly that each name is a blank sheet as far as you are concerned, and that you have no preconceptions at all. Is that really the case?

Really.......?

My husband is still in shock. When she first came on the scene he swore she was a man in drag. I'm looking forward to seeing her on the show, she's as mad as a box of frogs... does anyone else remember the Paxman interview?

Sid, Buddy, SCD and everyone else - here's looking forward to SCD 9 (?)
xxx

Sid - how dare you start without me.

I don't think I'll be a Nancy fan but who can tell.
Charity works - what happened here?

Dell’Olio is the chairwoman of Truce International[28], the British based charity she founded with Eriksson which aims to use football as a means of uniting people in areas affected by war. She has visited Israel numerous times to promote football as a force for peace. However, Truce appears to have been inactive since Dell’Olio launched it in front of the media, as the website and its ‘latest’ newsletter were last published in 2006. The UK government’s ‘Charity Commission’ website [29] shows no activity for this charity past or present, and there appears to be no registration for “Truce International” or charities with a similar name. Truce’s website shows no fundraising sums, past or present, or how funds raised through the charity have been distributed lately.
