BBC4 missing on Humax HDR

Hi, I have a twin cable Humax HDR which replaced my Sky HD setup almost 2 years ago.

Recently the second tuner has shown no strength or quality during diagnostics. This obviously led to concurrent program recordings failing and an inability to watch any other channel while recording.

After switching the Humax off I reseated all the connections to the quad lnb and the rear of the box itself and checked for shorts. Still one dead tuner (tuner 2).

After a factory reset and retune on the one good lnb feed I get good reception on all channels except BBC4. Switching the rear cables on the back of the Humax fires tuner 2 into life and makes tuner 1 dead so I don't think there is a fault in the HDR. It is running the latest firmware.

Any particular reason why I can no longer get a signal for that one channel? Bit annoying as it's one I like to watch.

Since you have checked the cable terminations, and they appear to be OK. The diagnostic process you have described seems to indicate that the LNB is faulty. Since it is a quad have you tried connecting the two cables to the two previously unused LNB outputs?. Also, swop over the cables at the LNB end to see if the fault moves to the other tuner, if it does, this would indicate a faulty cable.

I felt it was the lnb that might be faulty. It is an original Sky quad and 3 years old now. I don't know if these things have a shelf life or not.

I've ordered a replacement quad lnb from amazon for under a tenner and hopefully that will sort it out.

Still puzzled why I can pick up "weaker" broadcast streams like the horror channel and nothing at all on BBC4. I had set my postcode to the south west to get ITVHD. Maybe the signal is weaker for BBC4 from that transponder?

There's only 1 BBC 4 transponder, the post code won't make any difference. In the meantime connect tuner 1 to the good lnb input. Connect lnb1 out to lnb2 in with a short length of coax and reset the hdr.

This will give you two channel recording capability with some restrictions and even some third channel viewing.

After doing this start an instant recording on 108, start a second on 109. Tune to any of the following you should be able to view and live pause if your hdr is working properly

Code:
209 NHK World TV - HD

Always interested in what you say Graham and have often wondered why your Printouts have a delightful familiarity to me..
Just realised after 2 years!!.. that they look exactly like the Printouts from my old ZX 81 Printer

Presumably It's merely down to the the font used on the spreadsheet it comes from (A variation of helvetica). Unless using code tags imposes it's own font. Here's a test using Courier

Code:
120 S4C
135 CBS Reality
515 Vintage TV
719 Capital FM
720 Choice FM
721 Classic FM
722 Gold
723 XFM London
730 Planet Rock
805 Gems TV
806 TV Shop
817 Rocks & Co 1
818 Gems TV Extra
As you can see it's down to the code tags not the poster

Just to update I replaced the original Sky lnb which has a circular white "cone" on it with a Sky Quad lnb from Zinwell.

The new unit has an elliptical white cone. I'm now getting 100%/100% strength/quality diagnostics across all major channels and both tuners are working properly again.

BBC4 has also made a welcome return! Wanted to get it back before they show season 2 of The Killing, so happy days.

Thanks for your help.

You may need to do another factory reset so that the HDR sees the fixed second feed.

I had the same problem the other day with a message saying LNB Short, after fiddling with the F connectors on the LNB I got both tuners working. I had a proper look at the LNB and the cable and somehow come loose from the F connector on feed 2, I'm guessing that the high winds last Monday must have caused the cable to work loose from the F Connector, even though the cable was taped to the bottom of the F connector using electrical tapewith self amalgamating tape taping the Fconnector to the LNB.
