Problems with 2 year old Cat
gerbils
07-09-2011
Hi, I have a 2 year old female short hair domesticated cat and am having big problems with her. Recently she has become very aggressive hissing, biting and scratching anyone else who isn't me who come into the house now people do not want to come round. She is constantly on high alert and never seems relaxed. I cannot brush her coat without her nipping, scratching and running of. She now refuses to sit on my lap which she has done before. Giving her worming treatment is a nightmare you need to wrap her in a towel. I don't know what to do about her behavior I have tried squirting her with water and rattling something loud at her to put her off but it has not worked. She did have a traumatic experience in a cattery last year. She is mainly an indoor cat. Has anyone got any suggestions? Thanks

Has something spooked her recently? When you're out of the house could something have happened? A loud noise or something falling and scaring her?

Our cat, Clyde (God rest his cute little soul) was in the bathroom and something spooked him from outside. He started hissing and his fur went up etc. We have no idea what happened but something unsettled him. He wasn't aggressive though.

He is stressed perhaps?! Lonely? Do you have any other pets he can mingle with?

Sorry - not really helping, am I...!

I would think about a vet visit. She may well not have a physical illness, but if she does and is in pain it could account for at least some of her behaviour.

I agree total. It could be anything from tooth ache or anything. If she cant be handled by you for routine treatments i would get the vet nurse too do it.

I am not too sure if anything has upset her but she is an only cat so she could be lonely. I am not quite sure if she would be ok with another cat

A vet visit is a good idea, if he can't find anything wrong with her ,he might suggest Feeliway , a plug in infuser, which gives off cat pheramones and help her relax.

She sounds like she has become very territorial around you, so when someone comes into your house and wants to be with you, she reacts. She does sound rather stressed as well. I agree with the posts suggesting a trip to the vets, just to rule out if anything is physically wrong with her. If that (hopefully) being up zero, then maybe try changing who predominately looks after her, like sharing the food distribution, which you may probably do anyway. Just trying to think of some suggestions. I know my late cat had a spell of trying to hurt me, I do recall he trapped me up on the landing, wouldn't let me move, cos if I did he attacked me with claws, hubby had to resuce me , but he seemed to grow out of that.

How about looking up a cat behaviourist? I know they do exist although I have never used one, or come across one before.

I also agree with the post suggesting feliway. Does seem to calm cats down.

Good luck and keep us posted.
