Am I the only one who doesn't have a strong opinion on the contestants?

Nope, not the only one. I rarely feel very strongly about any contestant and not so at this early stage. I've said it before, but I really do just watch it for the dancing... oh, and the dresses

I may start warming to various people as the show goes on, but never felt strongly enough to vote for ANYONE. I find it kind of daft to get all worked up over someone I don't know, I'm never likely to know, and who has been edited to pieces with an agenda.

Donnie Burns and Gaynor are world famous dancers, if you search you will find a clip of Anton ( who was Tony Beke in those days)

Strictly started out as a serious dance competition and then changed to an entertainment show to compete with XFactor, the serious top professionals have been dropped ( Bennets, Cutlers and Ian Waite) in preference for others who will maybe be a bit more entertaining and controversial. Good Idea? Who knows only time will tell.
I am reserving judgement on the pairings, there might be a surprise or two along the way..

Chris Parker made the first final over Lesley Garett - when was Strctly ever primarily a serious dance competition?

Chris Parker made a farce out of dancing but everyone else was actually dancing. It was the gbp who kept Chris Parker in. since then the BBc have tried to find a comedy act each time.

It did start out however as a "dance" competition as opposed to a pure entertainment show. My dance teacher was the consultant to the BBC for that first show.
