I've only got the desire not hd. I find it very accurate.
Have you actually got gps turned on rather than relying on wifi or mobile triangulation? |

I've used the GPS on two different HTC phones (and three different Android phones in general, but not the Desire HD) and it's always been as accurate as any GPS device can be. Can you give specific examples?

I have the normal desire and that's very accurate,
My mother has the Desire HD, and I've had a fiddle on it, and that's fine as well |

There's a free app caled GPS Test from Chartcross that tells you all about your Android GPS, quality of signal, which sats, how much error there is and so on.

How accurate do you want it to be? I am not sure it is able to tell you which of your pockets you have put it in.

Its incredibly accurate and unlike other smartphones gets a lock very quickly outdoors and even indoors sometimes.
There was something where the gps would go into powersave between points on some gps tracking apps (endomondo etc) |

I have the Desire and my missus had the Desire HD.
When trying to find her at the London Marathon, her GPS was about 50m out! My Desire was spot on (5m). EDIT: When we were standing next to each other, she was showing on the wrong side of a bridge which was more than 50m away (and it thought she was in the river). It had made it very difficult to find her in the crowd. Since then I have used her phone a few times (for SatNav) and every time it has been out and noticably slower to get a fix than the Desire. I had assumed that it was just a bug with the model, but as not everyone has this issue, perhaps its worth contacting HTC and seeing if there is a software fix or if it can be returned and fixed. |

Just to echo earlier posters, I have the desire and never found any problems with the GPS on that.

They sort of work indoors via the mobile signal A-GPS and not the GPS.
I've noticed in tracking that when cycling through longer tunnels A-GPS tracking position can bounce 500 yards. |

OP, what software are you using when you find this problem?
The reason I ask is because my DHD is perfect with it's GPS. It works without issue and I even use it occasionally in an emergency service vehicle while travelling at speed under blue light conditions. It keeps up with that without any issue and has yet to let me down. I find that's more demanding that my day to day use in my own car. However, I have noticed that there are some applications on Android that don't appear to be as well written as others. It seems that while Google Maps and the satnav software that I use work well without issues there are a couple of applications that I've tested that don't hold the signal as well. I suspect that while the hardware is of course the same that the applications may handle the signal or talk to the hardware slightly differently depending on who's developed it. Perhaps some code is more efficient than others? If you stick to the reliable software titles the signal never seems to have an issue. |

My issues with inaccurate GPS were whilst using Google maps! So I guess its just a defective unit.
