Winning an Ivor Novella-Great Stuff and indeed richly deserved! One of the best songs EVER. Indeed one of the best albums EVER.
I'm sick of all the B.S. Lana's had to take. I have never seen somebody so incredibly good take so much utter dribbling nonsense criticism ever. Looking at some of the stupid posts by some people earlier on this thread is evidence of that.
How she looks, how she sings, whether she writes her own songs or not, how she's "depressing." There are crap pop stars with a fraction of her talent who don't get a shred of the abuse she gets.
SHOCK HORROR! She's actually quite a nice person by all accounts. Sure she's got dark little edges- that comes out in her songs, she's not a total saint, but she's always got time for her fans and comes across as a decent person in interviews.
Oh and just for the record, I personally don't consider Video Games, Born to Die and the rest to be depressing. Dark yes, but if you actually listen to them properly they are actually in a dark way uplifting. All tales of doomed romance and tender hope. S'not like she's the frickin' female solo artist version of Radiohead at all. Hell is that even a bad thing if she was? No male would get slagged off of that, so why does a female?
Oh and don't say it too loud but she actually does UPBEAT and HAPPY songs from time to time too. Like National Anthem. Like Diet Mountain Dew. Like Lucky ones. Like Million Dollar man, which incidentally is the best James Bond movie tune never recorded for a Bond film.
Oh and like You can be the Boss and Kinda Outta Luck-cause she did do songs before the Born to Die record you know. Particularly love the last one. Wonderfully Tarantino movie soundtrack bonkers style stuff with Lana wearing the greatest wickedest smile ever as she sings it in the video!
The only criticism I could lay on Del Rey is that she has occasionally wobbled when live. And I ENTIRELY blame that on the legions of idiots who have slated her on the web. They've shot her confidence to pieces. Its telling when she's on radio or infront of small groups of fans she's flawless.
But, and I love her for it, I think she's turning the page there as well. Since she did a great performance on the David Letterman's show in the US she's been turning that one around. She's actually done some really good live performances recently. Think she's just got to get used to it, conquer those nerves and she's sorted. Simple fact is she's got an incredible voice. Amazing amounts of vocal range. That's what always blows me away about her, she can sing so deeply and all the way up to so soprano high and I love how she plays around with that in her songs. I've never seen anyone who can sing like her, she's something truly special, not just one in a million, one in a billion. Hell one in a trillion.
I really hope winning the likes of the Ivor Nevello gives her some confidence back and she can kick on and rule the charts like she deserves to. Adele took a lot of stick when she 1st came along and look where she is now.
Go on Lana, you have the last laugh on the haters, you deserve it! You’re the greatest! No really, you are the greatest!
