Celebrated condiment HP Sauce, a staple of all British tables for many years, is to be changed in order to appeal to American consumers. After 116 years the sauce, which is now American, will be to change in order that it will appeal to American consumers.

Do you think it is right that such a British institution will become American?

Heinz made the changes after signing up to the Coalition Government's Responsibility Deal, a programme of targets for reducing the level of fats and salts used by food manufacturers. The key pledges include an agreement to reducing salt in food so people eat 1g less per day by end of 2012.

Health experts claim this measure will save the NHS £46 million a year within three years and prevent more than 4,000 premature deaths a year.
From what I can see, it has nothing to do with American consumers.

The reduced salt measure has recently affected several products... in the UK .

Besides, even if the article were true, it's the fault of the Brits for selling the family silver at every opportunity, it's happened so many times. If we don't want the Yanks to own our sauce we shouldn't sell it to them.

On a much more serious note I see the American editors of the 'brown sauce' article on wikipedia have brazenly called it 'steak sauce', which it evidently isn't. I expect the Daily Mail to promptly look into this.

I agree.

Do you only buy things that are made in the UK?

The US company has altered the recipe despite launching a Reduced Salt And Sugar version at the same time

lots of foodstuffs that you think are British are actually American. as long as the condiment tastes the same then who cares about the branding or marketing of the product.

Yes I did read that bit as well. What has that got to do with claims it was done for the American market.

Not the Brits per se but Tory sell-offs.

.. If we don't want the Yanks to own our sauce we shouldn't sell it to them..
Can't really stop it thanks to Thatcher's 'open market' policy.

Yep, Thatcher's to blame

Has the Queen got anything to say about it?

It's got "By appointment to Her Majesty the Queen" on the label.

Nothing, I was just pointing out that there wasn't really a need when a version is available that would probably meet govt targets.

Choice eh?

Are they actually changing the salt leveles in the original HP ? or is it that they have introuduced the new HP Reduced Salt and Sugar that the Mail is on about as it would make little sense to change the original and introuduce a new one .

It's different water. When it was made in Birmingham it was made using the local supply. Move the factory = different water. Not the same taste, which is why I don't buy it anymore

It is made with eastern Europe water which is not subject to the same quality controls. Some of the water contains things like ejaculate and cow.
