Avenging Spider-Man #1 a Good Starting Point?
I've never really read many comics but after seeing a load of superhero movies recently I'd like to get reading a few Marvel comics (Prefer their characters to DC's so not bothering with the new 52) and was wondering if Avenging Spider Man #1 would be a good starting point?
Would I need to know any continuity, and will any of the Avengers from the movies be in it (such as Iron Man, Thor; all I can see on the cover is Spider-Man, Wolverine, Red Hulk and someone else I don't recognise)? Thanks |

It probably as good a place as any, there is less likelihood of being bogged down by previous plot complications.

Joe Madureira is on art and he is notoriously slow these days which means the issues will probably come out at random intervals. But I think he may only be doing the first arc which is 3 issues. However, he's a 90s guy which means his art won't be to everybody's tastes. I still cringe that on the inside cover to 'Ultimatum #1' there was a naked Black Widow with giant boobs giving a naked Tony Stark a blow job and then in the next panel he was doing her doggy style.
Anyway, I'd probably wait to see what the reviews are like (Zeb Wells is writing and he's generally okay) and then see how often the book actually ships. Then if you really want it, I'd wait for the trade paperback, which would probably be a bit cheaper. |

The trades usually contain a full story arc, or they squeeze in two together if they are short. Most trades contain 4-8 issues. Trade paperbacks are the same thing as graphic novels, if that helps any.

Not true. Technically, trade paperbacks are collections of individual issues, while graphic novels are original stories in the same, or a similar, format but which have not previously been published in serialized form.
