This is gonna sound like a real dumb question but I was under the impression that the iPhone 4 can have an active data connection AND be on a call at the same time???

Today - whilst making a call, I noticed that the data icon at the top, completely vanished from my screen. As soon as I ended the call, the icon came back..?! I thought these 2 things were possible at the same time?!

I have a UK o2 non JB'd iPhone..........

Data can only be used during a call if you are on a 3G network.

O2 will often drop you onto the 2G network when you are in a call (even if the 3G signal is good), negating this function.

I've definitely used the internet with 3G whilst on a call, to look something up on Google maps, so that part works.

Yeah, that's the point. If you have a 3G signal and the 3G network is being used to make the call, you can use data. You can't do this if you're using the 2G network.

.....thanks for the update - funnily enough, this is exactly what happens pretty much every time

My phone happily sits at my desk, in the office, 2 bars with 3G. As soon as I get a call, voila - 3G disappears and so does the data icon!!!!

Can't say I have ever used data and a voice call at the same time but it would be nice knowing that I would be able to!!

Thanks O2
