Can anyone help me urgently re a canon camera

I have a Canon EOS 350D Digital camera. I have always just plugged it in the USB port and a wizard popped up which enabled me to download the photos from it.

I now have a computer that is Windows 7 the this scanner doesnt pop up now. I have manually tried to find the scanner but the camera does not show up in it.

Can anybody help me? Im desperate.

Thanks.

Did you install any software that came with the camera on your new computer? The wizard you mentioned appeared on your previous machine is more than likely something you had installed on it, not a part of Windows. Hence why nothing appears on your new computer.

You may have to go to the Canon website to download a newer version of the software if what you have is not fully Win 7 compatible.

When you plugged it into your Win 7 machine for the first time did the "Found New Hardware" wizard make an appearance? If it did then chances are that the camera appears in Computer as a disk drive and you can drag and drop pictures from that to wherever you like on your computer's hard drive.

When I first connected it, it said installing drivers but then said this was unsuccessful

The original software cd is missing.

In that case I think a visit to the Canon website is in order to see if they have up to date drivers and software available. If Windows didn't install the drivers properly then it won't know what to do when you plug the camera in.

I phoned Canon and the original software that goes with the camera is not downloadable. They said this would need to be installed first and then I can download an update from their website to make it compatible with Windows 7. As I cannot find the original software CD looks like I'm stuffed

Thanks for your help though.

Plug it in then check "My Computer" to see if it has shown up as a Drive. Failing that, get a card-reader and remove the flash card from the camera and use it with the reader.

it should show up in 'my computer' as an external drive, you can then access your photos from there. I never bother with the software that come with camera or mp3 players and just access them via 'my computer. it saves having loads of software on my PC I don't need.

Buy a multi-card reader (they're very cheap) if your computer doesn't have an SD card slot already. Remove the SD card from the camera and download the pics directly from the card.

Give it another go, it might work. I've a 550D and connected it via USB and W7 recognised it right away. I've never installed any software that comes with a camera,

Having said that, I find it easier just to take the card out of the camera and stick it in the laptop, but of course the 350D uses compact flash cards and not SD. When I had a 350D I bought a cheap multi-card reader from eBay

Are you quite sure this camera uses Compact Flash? I Think it may be SD.

The smaller Canon DSLRs use SD now but back with the 350D which is a few years old, they used CF still.

I had a 350D which I gave to my son last year, it was definitely CF cards I gave him, and a CF card reader.

Def a CF card camera - was my first proper camera!
Card reader is the way to go - much quicker transfer of photos. For editing, then there are other programs that do the same job, inc for RAW images
