Keeping your old number
My OH has just ordered his first smart phone from mobiles.co.uk and all is looking good - it should come tomorrow. However it seems he will have to have a new phone number even though he is staying with T mobile. Until now he has always been PAYG but this will be his first phone on a contract. Surely he must be able to keep the same number? Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance. |

It will be a new contract and brand new SIM so by default it will have a new number. This is perfectly normal. When migrating from one operator to another you can often carry your old number from the outgoing operator to the new one.
It might be possible to port (as the process is called) the old PAYG number to the new contract phone. You will have to contact T-Mobile and ask for this to be done. Before you do make a note of the SIM numbers of both phones and just in case the IMEI number of both phones. The SIM number (fairly obviously) is printed on the SIM card and the IMEI number is often on a label under the battery and on the box the phone came in (if you've still got them). |

I was with T-Mobile before changing to a contract phone. I just kept the new number as porting in and out and dealing with their customer service was a nightmare!

If he was on a contract, he wouldn't be able to keep his number when switching to a new contract on the same network.
However, as Chris said, since his number is on PAYG, there should be no problem switching it over to the new contract by just calling T-Mobile. |

My mrs kept her payg number, what a bit of a nightmare getting the PAC code as they asked to ID date and how much last top up was and some other stuff.
Don't know if you need to get PAC code if you are staying with same provider. |

I've just moved over from T-Mobile (PAYG) to Giffgaff and have phoned T-Mobile for my PAC code as I wanted to take my number with me, which they did and without any problems at all. It was given within a few minutes.
