When you’re not using the internet try turning data off as this should stop all connection to the internet.

Menu > Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile networks > and un-tick the “Data enabled” box.

You can download the Android power widget that gives you a short cut to turning data off.

Do you have it without a suitable data plan?

You should never guy a smartphone without having a proper data plan of at least 500MB or 750MB.

This will obviously also improve your battery life. I have a HTC phone and have wifi, mobile internet, Bluetooth and GPS all disabled unless I want to use them, at which point I switch the relevant feature on until I've done what I want to do.

Personally I'd say better advice is either:

a) if you get a smartphone, ensure you also get a data package

b) if you don't want to get billed for the internet on your phone and you don't want to pay extra for a data package, don't get a smartphone.

I have not had that problem, even with my phone downloading emails.
I got a 500Mb data plan, but never gone over it.

I almost did when i updated a couple of apps, that was my fault, i should have waited until I was at home.
My is a HTC phone

You shouldn't even have to do all that. Most Android phones I've used have a shortcut to switching mobile data on/off just by long pressing the power button. I thought HTC had built in widgets for controlling wifi and mobile data without the need to download anything, too.

for android, I use this:

3g watchdog.

It's free, you put in your monthly billing data and your monthly data allowance. It then warns you when you're near your limit, and can optionally, automatically turn off your data when its at the limit.

It'll be an app that the OP has installed probably.

I use a task killer on my HTC Sensation, and it automatically kills apps that use a lot of data. Therefore keeping my data usage down.
