Bowie influenced her hugely. Obviously not musically but in terms of style and dress/costume in her more experimental periods. Also the idea of playing a character, which Bowie made famous, was touched upon in much of her output and videos. The whole "Erotica" period felt very much like a persona rather than Madonna herself. The way she conducted herself in interviews felt very Bowie-like.

More singificantly, Freddie Mercury's performance style is almost a blue print for the hyperbolic, grand, OTT performances that Madonna did on tour. But the artist who I think she borrowed from most was Debbie Harry. The attitude, the style and some of the concepts in the eighties felt very Blondie-esque.”

PLEASE

This is grasping at straws and could be applied to any artist! lol

I don't wish to get into any immature ''Stan'' arguement, but you could apply these influences to many, many artists.

David Bowie's character pieces, and Freddie Mercury's stage presence/performance? Really?

Plus, Debbie Harry? Not that her attitude was copped from Janis Joplin, to the point of almost mimicking her interviews?

It brings to mind that ''short-term'' memory remark you made.

Well I stand by what I say. I don't believe Madonna copied these thing off artists mentioned but if you're going to use the "copied" word for Gaga, then you use it for Madonna. Marlene Dietrich, Marylin Monroe, Bowie, Freddie Mercury (I stick by my comment) Michael Jackson all have their mark on Madonna. In the same way, Madonna, Grace Jones, Debbie Harry, Bowie, Freddie Mercury etc. all have their mark on Gaga. That was the point I was trying to make. Gaga copies as much as Madonna copied. If we use that word.

And there are loads of music fans who seem to have short term memory. I remember reading a Bowie interview and he said he was often infuriated by die-hard Madonna fans who claimed she had done everything first when a lot of what they said applied to him primarily.

I agree. All artists are influenced by/copy/etc. other artists. If I became a music artist when I was older, I'd be influenced by all my favourite artists of my childhood.

Infact, one of my favourite songs is based on Borderline by Madonna. And I'm sure Borderline was based on something else aswell.

I find it quite humorous, if not very annoying that this thread has descended to this, yet another Madonna/Bowie/Gaga comparison thread that has no hope of being resolved.

People can be so predictable sometimes!

I think you have blurred the line between influenced and copied.

For example, Madonna has copied only a few times - the Marilyn photoshoots, Respect Yourself, the Hollywood music video, whatever. The rest can be put down to homage, like her Marlene Dietrich looks around The Girlie Show, the Vogue music video or Confessions. Plus, that's all over 30 years.

What annoys me about Gaga is that she rips off the specific things - the David Bowie lightening bolt, Alice Cooper bleeding to death, even small things like the way she handled her HBO special, the way it ripped from Truth Or Dare?

I don't know. I think Gaga makes it a lot more obvious, and does it a lot more. Even her interviews creepily resemble Madonna's from the early '90s, like her appearance on David Letterman earlier this year.

Of course, she could call it homage or tribute, but instead she embarks on immature rants like that NME interview.

How mature of you. Have you noticed my posts in the Appreciation thread? Or that I like her new album? And videos?

Forgive some of us for having perspective.

It's true. No point in denying it.

And I wasn't actually directing that at you.

Says the op with a huge grin on his post! - something tells me you might have predicted what you were getting your thread into as you were putting it up, didn't you?

Yeah, it's frighteningly true. They are totally obsessed. This thread is testament to that.

Yeah, I had an inkling that this could have happened. And surprise surprise, it did! Oh well.

But seriously, this whole Madonna/Gaga debate is getting so tiring. To the Madonna Stans: WE KNOW YOU THINK GAGA COPIED MADONNA, WE GET YOUR POINT.

Jesus some of those people just feel the need to repeat it again and again and again...

Oh sorry, I mentioned Jesus in my previous sentence, I too MUST be copying Madonna!

...Okay, rant over.
