Morning all - I have an HTC Trophy which came with a mains charger (model TC B240) into which you plug a USB to phone cable.

I have just bought a new mini camcorder (Panasonic HM-TA2) which doesn't come with a mains charger and is charged from the PC via USB. Genuine Panasonic mains chargers (VSK0752) are £74, almost as much as the camcorder itself

Can I plug the camcorder and its USB lead into the HTC charger and a.) charge the camcorder + b.) not destroy the charger or the camcorder?

if you need any info from the user manual let me know

cheers

Yes, USB chargers will all supply 5V up to 500mA - however some chargers will supply more then the standard 500mA for a rapid charge - if your device doesn't support this then it will charge at the lower rate.

that is not strictly true. Some devices detect if there is not enough amps and refuse to charge. So the answer is it depends on the device.

Though most would almost certainly charge powered off.
My two at 400 mah and 700mah I simply interchange.
The 400 mah one will charge my San Francisco more slowly or not at all depending on usage.

With tablets USB charge is sometimes left off so a cheap USB to 3.mm jack or whatever needed would no doubt work slowly powered off.

I hope you don't mind me adding something here, rather than starting a new thread, as the subject is similar.

The other day I spotted this 13 amp and USB socket at Maplin.

I can charge my phone from this without the power supply/transformet thing, can't I?

Best,

Sid
