how about the transformer ?

Dead easy to transfer data as it has a standard USB socket it in the keyboard and supports USB hard drives as well.

I'd rate the transformer higher, especially with Asus having a good reputation for software.
I'd consider the 1280 by 800 screen to be more usable.

Whilst only having a 1024X768 screen the, new in 2 weeks, Archos 80 G9 is sounding promising and travel friendly. The 250GB version might be an option too.

I would say that if you want to load your own video via a PC and you have files already ripped from DVD or you're happy to do that and have the flexibility that offers coupled with the mild inconvenience of having to create your own files, then an Android tablet is the way to go.

If you want a tablet where there's a reasonably wide choice of video already in a store and you just buy and download what's there, then you might find the iPad easier for you.

Only you can know whether an Android tablet or an iPad is more suited to you.

As far as web browsing goes, they're much of a muchness.

If you get it then make sure you get the keyboard. Not only do you get a keyboard (and stand), it provides more connectivity options (full size USB and full size SD card support) and increases battery life to around 15 hours.

Anyone else got any ideas or thoughts on what to buy?

The new Archos 80 G9 looks a big attraction too.
Available in a week or so starting at near £200.

A faster CPU than the iPad 2, same screen resolution but only 8".

You you have a smartphone? iPhone, Android, or Other?

Do you have a Currys / PCWorld (or similar) near you where you can go and have a play with an iPad and a Galaxy Tab?

As an owner of an iPad 2 I would suggest you go for that it is very reliable and in my opinion it can't be beaten.

Oh but it can by virtually every other similar priced tablet.

Anyway, its horses for courses. Personally having used the ipad2 i would never buy one.

The Transformer however i would buy in a heartbeat. Superb piece of kit.

How do "virtually every other similar priced tablet" beat the iPad 2? How does (like the high-end Android tablets) having the same CPU, an inferior GPU, more RAM, and fewer tablet-oriented apps* enable them to beat the iPad 2?

*[Which surely is the most important point...]

If "virtually every other similar priced tablet" can easily beat the iPad 2, how come virtually no one is buying those instead?

Go and try them and then buy the one you like.

I've only tried the iPad so I can only speak for that (and anyone criticising the others without actually having tried them is silly) but it's a brilliant piece of kit. Light, supremely easy to use (my 76 year old mum can use it with no problems!) and you have the biggest app store with a plethora of free and cheap apps to cover pretty much anything you could want it for.

Transferring videos is simple. You can rip them with a free bit of software called handbrake and they show up nicely with chapter thumbnails. The screen is very clear and the controls simple. Email, photos, web pages, google maps etc all work very well.

I'm sure all the other tablets do similar jobs, it's just a case of which one you like the look and feel of.

i see your point, but Android in my opinion provides a better user experience than iOS. In my view then, the high end Android devices are better than iPad2. Not everything has to boil down to specifications or indeed amount of apps worthless or worthwhile, its a very black and white view of things.

Hey, I'm just using tech specs as it's always the Android contingent here which seems to think that they're the be all and end all when comparing anything, and likes to say only Apple users think specs are irrelevant

I agree that user experience is an important thing. Some people prefer iOS, some prefer Android. The best thing to do is to try them all out and see which feels best, which is preferred... As I suggested way earlier in the thread, as did pumazooma today.

I looked at all the tablets in the last few months and in the end I went for the Ipad. The Samsung looks great and has a superbly sharp screen, but if you look at photos on it it is way too saturated. It is also mostly plastic in construction and the Ipad is Aluminium which feels much nicer and it feels like a quality product.

A few months ago I was even looking at the Advent Vega. Screen viewing angles are poor though..

If you can afford it the Ipad is still the best out there. Way more apps etc. Runs smoothly with no glitches either.

I did a video with my thoughts on tablets and what I bought myself and what I am using mine for.

You really need to account for what you are using these things for,.

Many have really paltry mono sound due to limitations of their size.
It is never as simple a decision as people try to make it out.
