OK, so they're offering this for £149.

Anyone got one? Is it recommended? Or are Liteon a joke brand and I'm better off saving my pennies for a Sony?

Liteon are a good brand. I have 1 of their CD recorders and it has been very reliable over the past couple of years. The brand has won numerous awards for their products so you should have no doubts about the manufacturer. I have not tried their DVD recorders so I can't say how good they are but if your going for any DVD recorder I suggest you look for a duel layer 1 these days. You can pick 1 up at places like http://www.ebuyer.com/ and http://www.overclockers.co.uk/ for on average at about £60 or less.

EDIT: A quick look on Ebuyer I have found a Liteon DVD recorder for £47. A big saving at about £100 from Dixons.

I think the OP means a set-top DVD Recorder (also available at E-Buyer).

I know Currys had a DVD Recorder which I think was the same brand, but did not have an RGB input. Not sure if this'll have the same issue.

Thanks for this. And apols for starting up this thread when there's a whole forum dedicated to DVDRs. Me so stupid.

But why are internal DVD recorders (for PCs) so much cheaper than settops? It's ridiculous.

There's a lot more to think about. The set-top machines will need a drive (like the bit for your PC) and a load of other stuff in one box like software, buttons, decoders, encoders, the TV tuner and all sorts of other bits and pieces that make it a dedicated machine.

OK accepted. I've taken a look at the ebuyer site. Their Liteon has received v positive reviews. Not sure if it's the same one as Dixons - looks the same. But the high street merchants are selling it for 30 quid less. Hmm.... tempted.

Although I think I'll hang on until the DVRs with hard disks become a wee bit cheaper. That's the equivalent of having a Sky ++ in my book.

And don't forget that a DVD burner for a PC is compatible world wide whereas a European DVD standalone is different from the US / NTSC areas... and sell in much less numbers than PC burners.....

Funnily enough I think that Liteon make the Sony PC DVD drives!! (under license perhaps)

Well, the Lite-On firmware works on Sony drives so I've heard. I have a Sony CD-RW myself and it acts like a sony (noisy eject, can be funny reading somediscs).

The Liteon model in Dixons is, I believe, the LVW5001.

The Liteon LVW5005 is a much better spec machine that supports both + and - media.

Where I work we buy Sony CDROM & DVDROM drives. I can confirm that they are indeed the same as Liteon units. Sony sent us Liteon firmware flashing programs, so that confirms they are one in the same. I'm not sure who has rebadged whom though

I bought a Lite-on DVD recorder from Curries about 2 months ago. I also have a Lite-on DVD burner on my computer. I am highly satisfied with both. The recording quality is very good, and although the Recorder at £149 lacks some of the features of my Toshiba DVD Player which it replaced, the pictures seems just as good to me. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

Hi
I think the Liteon model at Dixons and Currys is the 5001, the model Ebuyer sell is the 5005, thats the model I use as it has a TV tuner built in, The 5001 is just the recorder without the TV Tuner.
I think its a brilliant piece of kit, superb setup and configuration screens and very easy to use.
Hope this helps

It's the 5001 I have at £149 from Currys and it does have a TV tuner. I can set it up to record a particular channel at a particular time, just like a VCR. The difference is - the cheaper model only records +R or +RW, although it will also play -R and -RW as well as VCD's etc. The 5005 records and plays both.
